Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 01 Agustus 2013 | 23.23

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Transportation is warning the public of a person calling metro Atlanta residents with fake traffic fines.

The scam artist identifies himself as Lt. Derek White. Last week, he called a woman and told her that she needed to pay him a speeding fine of more than $300 over the phone or risk spending time in jail, according to GDOT spokesman David Spear.

"There is no individual named Derek White employed by the Georgia Department of Transportation," Spear said in a statement. "Further, the department has no enforcement or collection authority regarding traffic tickets or fines."

Anyone who receives a call from this scam artist is asked to report it to GDOT's Investigations Unit at 404-347-0620.

Andrea Sneiderman trial final jury to be picked Thursday

DECATUR, Ga. -- Selection of the jury pool for the Andrea Sneiderman trial finished Wednesday.  There were 42 potential jurors chosen.

Lawyers will pick the final 12 and alternates Thursday starting at 1p.m.

Judge Adams said opening statements will be on Monday.

Monday the judge removed Sneiderman from house arrest and her GPS ankle bracelet.  The $250,000 cash bond she posted was returned.  The $50,000 property bond remains in effect.

Of the jurors in the pool, both the prosecution and defense get nine strikes each and three preempts each.

Day one began with DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Gregory Adams formally dropping the most serious charges against her.

He signed "nol pros" documents dismissing charges of felony murder, malice murder and aggravated assault in the death of her husband.

The 37-year-old widow still faces charges of perjury, making false statements, hindering the apprehension of a criminal and concealing material facts in connection with her husband's murder.

Rusty Sneiderman was gunned down after dropping off one of the couple's two children at a Dunwoody day care in November of 2010.

Andrea Sneiderman's former boss, Hemy Neuman, was found guilty of murder but mentally ill after his trial in March of 2012.

During that trial, prosecutors openly accused Andrea Sneiderman of having an affair with Neuman and somehow convincing him to kill her husband, which she denied.

She was formally indicted and arrested for murder a year ago.

Student organizes 'White Student Union' at Georgia State University

ATLANTA -- A new student club at Georgia State University is attracting more attention than most new student clubs do -- just the club's name is stirring up controversy.

The first-year student at Georgia State who organized the club is calling it the "White Student Union."

The organizer, Patrick Sharp, insisted Wednesday night that no one should have any cause for worry or concern.

Sharp said he has heard objections from students about the club's name, and he understands why some are objecting.

But he's hoping no one will pre-judge him or his club.

"I decided to organize a White Student Union," he said, simply.

He started posting flyers this summer on the downtown Atlanta campus of Georgia State University.

Sharp said when he started his first year during this summer term, he noticed there were many other student clubs devoted to various racial and ethnic interests.

So he started the White Student Union.

He said five or six students have joined so far.

"I sort of took it upon myself, kind of with inspiration from Matthew Heimbach's group in Maryland, at Towson University," which is also called the White Student Union, to form a similar club at GSU, Sharp said.

The White Student Union at Towson University has been accused of being a hate group, which Heimbach has denied.

At GSU, the group "Progressive Student Alliance" has posted flyers on campus against Sharp's club, equating his club with white supremacists.

"You know, to say this is some closeted or curtained white supremacy, it's pretty -- and I'll go ahead and turn their words around on them -- it's pretty ignorant and close-minded," Sharp said. "It's a pride organization, it's a cultural organization, what we have is not hate for any other group.... Whites are becoming a minority.... We have a voice, we're unique people, and we have every right to make that voice heard."

The new club has stirred up controversy not only among students at Georgia State, but also among students at other colleges and universities.

Amanda Miller just graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, and was at GSU Wednesday night waiting for a friend who was taking a final exam.

"I think to have a white student association is kind of ridiculous," Miller, who is white, said. "I mean, on one level, I understand wanting to connect with your heritage," and she said she might be interested in participating with others who share her family's background, which is Irish and Norwegian. "I don't feel the need to join a white student association. I'm happy to connect with my personal, cultural roots. But a white student association sounds a little, I don't know, I could see how it could go very wrong."

GSU Senior Stephanie-Joy Rhoden, an African American: "It's just the name, I think, really to be honest" that raises concerns for many. "That might make you go to that place in your head where you're, like, whoa, wait a minute, what's that about."

She's keeping an open mind about the club.

"Hopefully they have good intentions," she said, and, if so, no one should interfere with them "to do their thing. If they want to make a group, who's to say that they can't, in today's society?"

"At this point, we're received emails from six students," said GSU's Vice President for Student Affairs, Douglass Covey. "The students are expressing concern about the intended purpose of this organization."

Dr. Covey tells them the White Student Union, as an informal student club, has every right to exist.

The GSU student body is diverse. 38 percent are white, 35 percent are black, 12 percent are Asian, and seven percent are Latinos.

Dr. Covey said if Sharp wants the club to be a formal, recognized, GSU student organization, he can go through the same application process that the current, 300 or so official student clubs underwent.

"The campus, as a public institution, is a place where freedom of speech and association and the liberal exchange of different points of few is cherished and protected," Dr. Covey said. "And any group that wishes to seek recognition must meet the standards of alignment with institutional mission and non-discrimination. And any group which wishes to exist informally, without institutional affiliation, certainly is free to do so, just as a right of their citizenship."

"What we are is an organization that just loves where we come from," Sharp said, "we love our heritage, we love our ancestries, and we have a lot of pride in that."

Sharp said he hopes the club will grow during fall semester when more students are attending classes. And he said he wants to work with student clubs representing other races and ethnic groups on charities and causes and issues important to all on campus and across the city.

ATLANTA -- A consulting firm that did strategic planning for the King Center is now suing, saying it was never paid $216,000 for its work.

In a complaint filed July 30 in federal court in Atlanta, Nevada-based Strategic Decisions LLC says it was contacted by Martin King III, then CEO of the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change Inc., in the fall of 2010 and asked to provide strategic planning services. The firm says it agreed to work for a monthly rate of $15,000.

Its complaint states, "Strategic Decisions assisted The Center in clarifying its mission, hiring senior level executives, improving organizational performance, identifying opportunities for partnership and collaboration, and securing new funding, among other things."

But it says it hasn't received a single payment from the King Center.

Atlanta Business Chronicle reported in January 2012 on Martin King III's plan for a $100 million renovation of the 30-year-old facility as well as plans to preserve his father's legacy for generations to come. A short time later his sister, Bernice King, was named CEO of the King Center.

Judgment day for Ariel Castro

CLEVELAND -- In a memorandum filed on the eve of Ariel Castro's sentencing, prosecutors say they intend to detail how Castro lured three women to his Cleveland house then used physical and mental restraints to control them for a decade.

The three women held captive in the run-down home kept diaries documenting the physical and sexual abuse they suffered on a daily basis, prosecutors said Wednesday.

LIVE VIDEO & SOCIAL MEDIA | Ariel Castro sentencing hearing

Each of the victims -- Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus -- was lured to the house, either with a promise of a ride, a visit with Castro's daughter or, in Knight's case, a puppy for her son.

Once in the house, Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty says in the sentencing memorandum, Castro would keep them chained and locked in the upstairs rooms or subjected them to "the cold of the basement and the heat of the attic as punishment techniques."

McGinty said Castro kept a gun "and threatened to shoot the captives if they ever tried to escape."

One of the women broke free in May and called for help.

Castro has pleaded guilty to 937 counts, including kidnapping, rape, assault and aggravated murder. He's being sentenced Thursday.

According to the memo, Castro told his captives that "he had other victims and that some of them made it home but that others had not."

The document states that "the victims of the defendant's heinous crimes did everything humanly possible to retain a sense of normalcy. They were able to mark the passage of time through the maintenance of diaries. Several diary entries document abuse and life as a captive."

Berry wrote to her mother in her diary, even after she knew her mother had died.

"The victims had to watch the rest of the world turn as they were held in captivity. Holidays, world events, and even the passing of Ms. Berry's mother were observed by them, removed from the outside world."

At some point between Aug. 23, 2005, and Oct. 31, 2005, the defendant "forced the three victims into the garage behind his house ... for three days they were kept physically restrained in a vehicle in the garage while the defendant had a visitor at his house."

The document tells of the birth of Berry's daughter on Dec. 25, 2006. Neither the baby nor Berry received any medical treatment. The baby was delivered by Knight in a plastic wading pool. The baby was not breathing when it was born but Knight performed CPR and the baby started breathing.

McGinty wrote that the defendant admitted that he intended to terminate Knight's pregnancy by punching and kicking her in the stomach and starving her for days, something he accomplished when she miscarried.

McGinty says experts will also discuss the Stockholm syndrome to explain how Castro was able to keep the women captive for so long. The Stockholm Syndrome is to become bonded in a strange way with your captor.

In the document, Castro admits that he kept Knight locked up in various rooms using chains and zip ties and having padlocks on exterior doors. He admits he also stuffed a piece of cloth in her mouth to keep her from screaming.

Castro admits "to having the girls chained by their ankles, with only one meal a day, showering infrequently, while he had 'sexual relations' with them. In the end, he claims that he 'gave them all a chance to escape' by leaving the door to Ms. Berry and her child's room unlocked."

Gilmer County Fire Chief Tony Pritchett said crews are performing multiple rescues from flooded homes in the Clear Creek and Blackberry Mountain parts of the county.

Blackberry Mountain Road in Ellijay is shut down at the bridge at Azalea Road due to severe flooding. Fendley Bridge on Clear Creek Road is open, but the bridge on nearby Holt Road was washed away.

The Gilmer County Sheriff's Office said Gilmer Middle School is being used as a shelter for displaced residents. Power has been shut off in most of the eastern part of the county due to downed power lines.

Pickens County Sheriff's Lt. Kris Stancil said a mudslide washed over part of Burnt Mountain Road (Highway 136 east) near the Scenic Overpass. A bridge on another portion of the road is completely impassable because of high water levels.

A car was washed downstream at Camp Hope Road in Jasper. The two teenagers inside were unharmed and were pulled ashore by a Forsyth County swiftwater rescue team. 11Alive's Paul Crawley learned the teens are interns with a Young Life camp at nearby SharpTop Cove.

At least one home in the area suffered significant flooding, Stancil said. There were also numerous traffic accidents because of the weather. Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible.

Nearby Forsyth County also experienced flooding. The southbound lane of State Route 371 in Cumming is closed near Vickery Creek Middle School due to a collapsed drainage culvert.
