DUNWOODY, Ga. -- Police are investigating a shooting near Perimeter Mall after an officer fatally shot a suspect during an attempted traffic stop.

According to police, the suspect was driving recklessly and was pulled over at the Exxon on Perimeter Center West. The driver of the vehicle then struck several cars and fled the scene, driving north on Ashford Dunwoody Road. When the driver got stuck in traffic, the suspect then made a U-turn on Ashford Dunwoody Road heading southbound.

Two Dunwoody Police officers directing traffic at the intersection of Perimeter Center West and Ashford-Dunwoody Road noticed the vehicle and attempted to stop the suspect. The suspect's vehicle rammed through several other cars and charged one of the officers. The officer fired once into the vehicle, striking the suspect.

The suspect then drove onto Perimeter Center East where the vehicle came to a stop in front of an apartment complex.

The suspect was treated on the scene for a gunshot wound to the upper torso, then transported to Grady where he was pronounced dead.

The officer who discharged his weapon is on paid, administrative leave. The GBI is assisting with the investigation.
