9-year-old boy still critical after crosswalk crash

REDAN, Ga. -- A 9-year-old boy remains in critical condition after being struck by a car in DeKalb County Tuesday morning.

DeKalb County Police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said Moses Moore was in a crosswalk when he was hit by a Mercedes SUV on Panola Road at about 7:30 a.m. Witnesses said the boy darted in front of the vehicle, which had a green light.

Parish originally said Moore was pronounced dead at a local hospital. At around 9:30 a.m., she said police received a report that the child was still alive and in critical condition.

His mother Roberta Moore issued a statement Wedneday:

"Thank you to everyone for your outpouring of love and support for Moses. We appreciate your prayers and concern, and we ask that you keep praying for Moses. We would like to request privacy for Moses and our family during this difficult time."  

Investigators said Moore is a student at Panola Way Elementary School.

Neighbors said they saw the boy walking by himself before 7 a.m. and thought that was odd.

One neighbor, Tiffany Goodson, said Moses had asked her if she could give him a ride to school. She said Moses told her that he had been suspended from the bus and needed a ride. Goodson told Moses that her boyfriend was preparing to leave for work and to wait a moment while she asked him if he could drive the boy to school. When she came back to the door, Moses was nowhere to be found.

Family members told 11Alive's Jerry Carnes that Moses was actually suspended from school entirely, and had slipped out of the house while everyone else was asleep. They said he may have been confused and thought he was only suspended from the bus and would have to walk to school.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the car that hit Moses, as the boy stepped out into traffic on the roadway. Authorities are continuing their investigation of the circumstances behind the accident, including finding out why Moses was by himself at the time of the accident.
