Community gathers to support victims of Conyers fire

CONYERS, Ga. -- No amount of teddy bears, flowers or candles can end the pain felt by many in Rockdale County.

But Wednesday night, dozens gathered on Pinedale Circle in Conyers, stacking small keepsakes in front of the burned home where four children lost their lives.

Four young children, ranging from ages 8 months to 9 years, died when a fire broke out in their home Tuesday night. Deon Glass, Jr., Amoni Roberts, Deshon Glass and Ah'Dariya Glass never made it out of the house.

Their mother, Reba Glass, was able to throw 6-year-old Darnell, Jr. to safety from a second floor window. Those two, along with the children's grandmother, survived.

"You feel so empty," said cousin Rebecca Bailey. "You just want to do something when tragedy like this hits, and it's so close to home."

Bailey was among several relatives gathered at Wednesday night's vigil. Xavier Shepherd had been at the house only three days earlier, playing in the yard at a family gathering. One of his final memories was tossing around a football with his cousin, 7-year-old Deshon Glass, who died in the fire.

"I just remember having a real good time with them," Shepherd said.

As news of the tragedy spread, people throughout metro Atlanta looked for ways to help the family.

Rockdale County commission chair Richard Oden said he spent Wednesday fielding calls from people around the state.

"We're going to wrap our arms around this family," he said. "It's heart touching to be able to see that the community cares."

Funeral services have been donated by Levett and Sons Funeral Home in Conyers. George Levett told 11Alive the funeral will take place Saturday, January 19th. The date was pushed back to allow their mother, Reba Glass, to be released from the hospital to attend her children's service.

A memorial fund has been established for the Glass Family through Wells Fargo.
