ATLANTA (WXIA) - The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of northwest Georgia and a Winter Weather Advisory for the remainder of north Georgia, including the city of Atlanta, through Friday morning.

The Winter Storm Warning covers Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Chattooga, Gordon and Floyd counties, and includes Rome and Calhoun. The Winter Weather Advisory covers Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin, White, Bartow, Cherokee, Forsyth, Hall, Banks, Jackson, Polk, Paulding, Cobb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Barrow, Haralson, Carroll, Douglas and DeKalb counties - this includes Cartersville, Gainesville, Marietta, Lawrenceville, Carrollton, Douglasville, Decatur and the city of Atlanta.
A stalled surface front is continuing to bring widespread rain across the northern half of Georgia and is expected to shift southward as a cold front on Thursday. Behind the front, a cold weather air mass will spread across the state.
As the low pressure area moves to the northeast, wrap around moisture should swing into the area, causing the rain to change over to snow across the northern part of the state late Thursday. Heaviest snowfall amounts - 2-to-4 inches - are possible across the far north Georgia Mountains. Less than an inch of snow on grassy or elevated areas is expected across the remainder of the watch area - including in the city of Atlanta. Black ice can be expected over most of north Georgia during the overnight hours.
11Alive Meteorologist Chesley McNeil says rain should begin to change to snow over the western and northwestern portions of the state after noon on Thursday, with rain beginning to mix with snow in Metro Atlanta between 3 & 4 pm.
Lows are expected to drop into the low 30s late Thursday night, with winds out of the northwest from 10-to-20 miles per hour with gusts up to 30 mph.
