Some city leaders say new Falcons stadium was fast-tracked

ATLANTA -- It's almost a done deal, but a couple of Atlanta City Council Members are raising red flags about Monday's vote to approve a new stadium for the Atlanta Falcons.

Council members Felicia Moore and Howard Shook were among the four who voted against the plan. They're accusing their colleagues of fast-tracking the plan to use the city's hotel/motel tax revenues to partially pay for a new billion-dollar stadium.

"This is unprecedented, and I hope it will never happen, again, in the city of Atlanta," Moore told 11Alive's Jennifer Leslie. "You do not pass something that has 50-year implications and a billion dollars invested and vote on it hastily at a council meeting at the end of the day."

Moore refused to cancel a work session on the plan that's scheduled to start at 2 p.m. today. As chair finance committee, she said she wants to use meeting to get input from the public on the final deal.

City council members received copies of the final deal last Wednesday. They approved it with an 11-4 vote on Monday.

"Given more time to examine documents and ask questions, I might ultimately have voted in favor of the resolution," Shook said. "But I believe that council's unprecedented haste to adopt this complex, multi-party, billion-dollar deal strained our ties with the public, and establishes a new political 'normal' that may not always serve the greater good."

Moore said she believes there are still a lot of questions that no one's had time to ask about what's really in the plan. She's been on the council for 16 years.

"It has been fast-tracked through the council and has circumvented the opportunity for the council to have any meaningful impact on it," Moore said.

The city's economic development arm called Invest Atlanta has yet to approve the plan but is expected to do so soon.
