ATLANTA -- Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward will undergo surgery on his broken jaw Thursday.

While at bat in the sixth inning of Wednesday's ballgame, Heyward was hit by a 90 mph fastball thrown by Jonathon Niese of the New York Mets. . The Braves had two outs when Niese's pitch went off course.

Heyward immediately fell to the ground, but never lost consciousness. He even popped his head in his team's dugout to say goodbye to some of his fellow players.

He was then taken to Manhattan Hospital for x-rays.

The right fielder could be out for the rest of the season. The Braves hope to have a better sense of the timeline when Heyward comes out of surgery.

The Braves issued a statement Wednesday night saying the Heyward fractured his jaw in two places.

The Braves went on to win the game for Heyward, rising over the Mets 4 - 1.
