JASPER, Ga. -- The rains that moved through metro Atlanta Wednesday night caused some major flooding in Pickens and Gilmer counties.

Gilmer County Fire Chief Tony Pritchett said crews are performing multiple rescues from flooded homes in the Clear Creek and Blackberry Mountain parts of the county.
Blackberry Mountain Road in Ellijay is shut down at the bridge at Azalea Road due to severe flooding. Fendley Bridge on Clear Creek Road is open, but the bridge on nearby Holt Road was washed away.
The Gilmer County Sheriff's Office said Gilmer Middle School is being used as a shelter for displaced residents. Power has been shut off in most of the eastern part of the county due to downed power lines.
Pickens County Sheriff's Lt. Kris Stancil said a mudslide washed over part of Burnt Mountain Road (Highway 136 east) near the Scenic Overpass. A bridge on another portion of the road is completely impassable because of high water levels.
A car was washed downstream at Camp Hope Road in Jasper. The two teenagers inside were unharmed and were pulled ashore by a Forsyth County swiftwater rescue team. 11Alive's Paul Crawley learned the teens are interns with a Young Life camp at nearby SharpTop Cove.

At least one home in the area suffered significant flooding, Stancil said. There were also numerous traffic accidents because of the weather. Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible.
Nearby Forsyth County also experienced flooding. The southbound lane of State Route 371 in Cumming is closed near Vickery Creek Middle School due to a collapsed drainage culvert.
