ATLANTA -- Benches cleared early in Wednesday night's game between the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers after a Carlos Gomez homer in the first inning.
As he slowly trotted around the bases, Gomez mouthed off to pitcher Paul Maholm and first baseman Freedie Freeman. By the time Gomez made it around to home plate, Braves catcher Brian McCann blocked the way, and got into Gomez's face.
According to USA Today, Gomez may have been talking smack to Maholm in particular, since Maholm hit Gomez in his knee with a fastball in June.

The smack-talking quickly descended into a clearing of the benches on both sides.
And even though Gomez never did touch home plate, the umpire gave the Brewers the homer. Gomez was ejected from the game.
The Brewers went on to shut out the Braves 4-0.
The NL East champion Braves were shut out for the second time in three nights and have been blanked 17 times, second-most in the league.
After losing three of four, Atlanta has fallen three games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the NL's best winning percentage.
Lohse (11-10) struck out five and threw just 22 of 89 pitches for balls. In his first season with Milwaukee, Lohse was pitching for St. Louis when he had his last shutout, a 5-0 victory over Washington on April 21, 2011.
Gomez, made it 1-0 in the first with his 23rd homer, but was ejected without touching home plate during a benches-clearing argument.
