Jason Carter to run for governor

ATLANTA -- Jason Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, plans to run for governor of Georgia next year.

Carter said Thursday in a phone interview with The Associated Press that the state can't wait to start addressing an education system he says is on the brink and an economy that's not working for the middle class.

Carter has been a state senator representing Decatur for three years. He instantly became a political star in part because of his grandfather. Carter would become the favorite to win the Democratic nomination next year. But he also faces long odds.

In the last state election in 2010, every Democrat running a statewide race in Georgia lost. Roy Barnes, a former Governor, got clobbered by now Governor Nathan Deal. Deal will run for re-election next year-- but has two Republican primary challengers.

Carter would be among many politicians vying for voters attention in the next year. Three members of congress and a former secretary of state are among those hoping to take the US Senate seat being vacated by Saxby Chambliss.

That means there will be open congressional seats in three districts -- and 16 candidates are running, so far, in those three districts. In Georgia's fourth district, Democrat Hank Johnson faces a primary challenge from DeKalb County's popular sheriff Thomas Brown.

Plus, Georgia's 2014 primary has been moved up to June 3 -- the earliest primary in Georgia history.
