ATLANTA -- A Special Deputy U.S. Marshal was shot in the leg in southwest Atlanta Thursday morning.

The victim was shot at a house on Diana Drive SW at around 6:30 a.m. DeKalb County police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said the man is a DeKalb County police officer who is assigned to the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force.

A U.S. Marshals spokesman said marshals were assisting Atlanta police in serving a drug warrant against 40-year-old Titus Bates. Bates has a long criminal history, according to the spokesman.

When officers arrived at the house, Bates fired a .45 caliber pistol through the door, hitting the marshal in the calf, according to police.

Dispatchers said the wounded officer was alert and conscious. He was taken to Atlanta Medical Center, where he is in stable condition.

Footage from 11Alive's news chopper shows the officer being rushed to the hospital in a dark-colored SUV. At Atlanta Medical Center, he is loaded onto a gurney and taken inside.

Bates was arrested on the scene.

"While this is a worst-case scenario for any law enforcement agency, we dealt with the issue calmly and smoothly, focusing on getting our guy to the hospital without losing much blood and arresting the fugitive," Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Keith Booker said in a statement.
