DAWSONVILLE, Ga-- It's been one week since 20-year-old friends David Wood and Mason Cox disappeared. Their families are baffled. So are police. No one's giving up trying to find them.
Investigators with cadaver dogs continue to search the woods near the young men's homes in the Frederick's Cove neighborhood off of Lake Lanier in Dawsonville.
There is still ice on the lake surface, there, and as soon as it breaks up, as early as Thursday, the Sheriff will send divers and sonar equipment down. They'll search near the dock belonging to a neighbor of the young men, where they were fishing just before they disappeared.
David Wood, studying to be a draftsman, and Mason Cox, who was about to begin school to train to be a firefighter, disappeared before dawn Thursday, January 2, from Wood's home, where the two had gone after their early morning fishing trip on the lake. They often fished together in the early morning hours.
Their mothers, Ethelyn Geiger and LeeAnne Cox, tell 11Alive News that all evidence still points to this -- that their sons may have driven off with someone, suddenly.
One left his cell phone and wallet behind. The other's cell phone is missing, and was turned off at about 6:00 a.m. Thursday, according to Dawson County Sheriff's Major Tony Wooten.
Maj. Wooten has known both families since Wood and Cox were small boys. Wooten coached Wood in Little League baseball.
"And I know the families, so I know that, it is our belief, that the kids would have reached out and made contact with somebody at this point.... We've just come up with nothing."
Geiger, David Wood's mother, told 11Alive's Jon Shirek, "We have NO clue where these boys are. No clue. I know, I feel my son's spirit, and I feel like he's alive. He needs help. But he's scared. I think they're scared."
Cox said, "We've been following every tip, whether it's bad or good, I've been stopping cars, I've been stopping cars, I've been passing out these fliers, I have talked to so many people. I think I've got some leads, I've given them to the police department."
Geiger made a televised plea to the boys, "David and Mason, if there's any chance you see your moms standing here, we desperately want you to come home, we don't care what you've done, we don't care where you are, who you're with, what has happened. Please come home. Please get in touch with someone. So that we know you're okay. So many people love you and are looking for you."
The Sheriff is not ruling out any possible reason for their disappearance; he and the moms are pleading for solid tips -- hoping anyone with any information will contact the Dawson County Sheriff's Office:
