ATLANTA -- Tambo, an eastern bongo at Zoo Atlanta, somehow managed to leave his habitat Wednesday afternoon.

Zoo spokeswoman Keisha Hines said Tambo was not out of his habitat for long before a veterinary team found him. The eastern bongo was not aggressive or distressed during the incident.

A veterinarian was able to safely tranquilize Tambo and return him to his exhibit.

Hines said all zoo guests were escorted to buildings as a safety measure. The zoo was briefly closed Wednesday afternoon.

Zoo Atlanta officials are now investigating to determine how Tambo left his habitat.

Eastern bongos are a critically endangered antelope species native to eastern Africa.
