JONESBORO, Ga. -- A Clayton County sheriff's deputy was involved in a shooting in Jonesboro Thursday morning.
The shooting happened just after 8 a.m. near a house on Janette Court near Jonesboro High School.
Sheriff's spokesman Brian Crisp said the deputy tried to pull over the suspect as he drove erratically through a school zone. The suspect drove into a neighborhood, got out of the car and pulled a gun from his trunk. He then ran into the nearby woods, Crisp said.
The suspect ambushed officers when they tried to follow him. Crisp said the suspect and deputy shot at each other and both were hit. They were taken to a hospital; there is no immediate word on their conditions.
Jonesboro High School and nearby Jackson Elementary School were temporarily on lockdown. The lockdown has since been lifted; Clayton County Schools spokesman David Waller said no students were in danger.
