UNION CITY, Ga. -- A man suspected of murdering his wife in Cobb County has been arrested in south Fulton County.
John Kristofak was taken into custody at 3:30 a.m. Thursday at a Motel 6 in Union City, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Kristofak, 58, was the prime suspect in the murder of his 48-year-old ex-wife Donna Nations Kristofak in their Marietta home last weekend.
He was still driving the brown Chevy Equinox that had been widely broadcast since the search for him began Dec. 23. The vehicle was parked outside the motel when a team made up of the U.S. Marshals Office, Cobb County Sheriff's Fugitive Unit and Union City Police arrived to make the arrest.
He was taken into custody "after a brief struggle," according to U.S. Marshals spokesperson Gavin Duffy. Arresting officers also found a gun in Kristofak's motel room in plain sight. Duffy declined to name the specific motel where the arrest occurred, but said the owners were extremely cooperative in helping them quietly evacuate surrounding rooms.
Kristofak was taken by surprise and was "non-compliant" in the arrest, but was taken into custody and transported back to Cobb County.
Cobb County Police Ofc. Mike Bowman said Kristofak has been charged with murder and aggravated assault. He will be held in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.
