SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- A 70-year-old Stone Mountain man has been denied bond after a series of hit and runs that ended in a Snellville restaurant.
Michael Owen Snider's made a first appearance before a Gwinnett County Magistrate Judge Thursday morning. The hearing was expidited due to his age and health concerns. Bond was denied for Snider at the hearing.
Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said Snider hit at least a dozen cars between DeKalb and Gwinnett counties Wednesday night before running into John Boy's Home Cooking restaurant on Highway 78.
No one inside the restaurant was hurt, but one of the wrecks was fatal.
Ritter said just before Snider ran into the building, he sparked a chain reaction crash that pinned a Toyota Camry under the bed of tractor trailer on Stone Mountain Highway at Walton Court.
Sixty-nine-year-old Mintiwab Woldeyhans of Loganville was riding in the Toyota and died at the scene. The Toyota's driver, 51-year-old Yeshihareg Abebe of Grayson, suffered life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized in critical condition.
Snider was also taken to the hospital after complaining of injuries.
The 70 year old was charged with driving under the influence, vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving and following too closely. Additional charges are pending.
When asked if Snider would be transferred to DeKalb County to be arraigned on the charges there, Ritter said he would remain in Gwinnett County since the most serious of the charges - the vehicular homicide - occurred in that jurisdiction.
