Authorities recover body of missing swimmer

CANTON, Ga. -- Cherokee County divers recovered the body of a 17-year-old swimmer who went missing on Wednesday afternoon. 

Police received a call around 1:45 p.m. about a "swimmer in distress" near the Hickory Log Reservoir.  According to the call, Jon Thomas Bettis and a friend were swimming right before he began struggling the water. 

The caller said he attempted to help Bettis to shore before he called for help. Officers recovered Bettis' body at around 5:00 p.m.
