Ranger shot at Lake Lanier park

GWINNETT COUNTY -- Police say a park ranger was shot Wednesday evening at Buford Dam Park.

Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Jake Smith said the shooting happened at around 10:15 p.m. at the Lower Overlook area of the park. Cpl. Smith said the wounded ranger made his way on foot to a main park road where passersby called 911.

The ranger was able to give a statement to the responding officers before he was transported to a local hospital. He said he had approached the suspect to tell her the park was closed. The victim described the suspect as a black woman in a pickup truck.

Officers checked the park area and found a person matching the ranger's description of the suspect dead inside a nearby vehicle. Detectives say the woman committed suicide.

The ranger has undergone surgery but no condition report is available. The name of the deceased woman has not been released.

Investigators said the ranger was unarmed when he was shot.
