ATLANTA -- The Humane Society of the United States is asking the federal government to strip Georgia Regents University of their research funding.

FULL STATEMENT FROM GEORGIA REGENTS UNIVERSITY

At issue the school's use of dogs for dental surgical procedures. The group used graphic undercover video to make their case.

The procedures involve dental implants for people, but the dogs are used to as surgical surrogates. Their teeth are removed and the implants are inserted. Video shows the sutures and implants that are in place in one of the animals.

The Humane Society acknowledges that the surgeries done on the dogs are completely legal. But the group also believes that doesn't mean they're not a crime. Of morality.

The undercover videos speak for themselves. In one, a caged and underweight dog can be seen with injuries to its legs and paw. Another caged dog is temporarily set loose to run playfully down the hall of the facility.

But From there we can't show you anymore. Even the sound of the bone saw is a bit much.

The dogs are anesthetized for surgery. Then they are euthanized for further study.

"We are calling on GRU to get rid of these outdated practices," said Kathleen Conlee, of the Humane Society. "If you're going to be using animals in research you should be investing in resources appropriately. We're urging the USDA to use meaningful animal welfare penalties against this institution, and also calling on the National Institutes of Health to look at whether this institution should be funded with taxpayer dollars."

The school issued a statement saying in part:

"Dogs are used infrequently in research conducted at the university. The dogs were obtained from a vendor licensed and inspected by the USDA. All animal experiments at GRU are reviewed with great scrutiny by the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee, as required by federal guidelines, and this review board includes scientists, clinical veterinarians and community members."

GRU's policies and procedures for the utilization and care of animals can be found at GSU policies
