(WXIA) -- Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.4 percent in December, down from 7.6 percent in November.
The rate was 8.7 percent in December 2012.
Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said the drop was mostly due to seasonal hiring.
"I'm particularly pleased that we had some 90,000 more jobs this December than last, which is the best December job growth in eight years," Butler said.
Gains were strong, but Georgia still lost about 4,800 jobs between November and December.
Despite the layoffs, fewer than 350,000 Georgians were unemployed in December -- the lowest number since October 2008.
