Flash Flood Watch continues through Friday morning

(WXIA) -- Heavy rain is expected to continue into Thursday across Georgia.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for much of the state through Friday morning. Rainfall amounts of 4-to-6 inches are expected across the area, with locally heavier amounts possible.

Flash flooding of areas, especially low-lying areas, is possible. Levels of creeks and rivers has increased significantly, and may cause some localized flooding as well.

11Alive Chief Meteorologist Mike Francis cautions that with the significant rainfalls we have already received, that soft ground may have loosened roots on some trees, which may lead to some of them falling down.

Georgia Power says that only about 500 customers are affected by outages across the state as of 5:30 a.m. Officials in many areas are watching the states waterways, and are ready to take action if needed.

Officials in Flowery Branch declared a local state of emergency Wednesday night after heavy rains forced the closing of Cantrell Street where it crosses Flowery Branch Creek.

No airport delays were reported early Thursday, after major delays were reported by airlines at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport Thursday night.
