ATLANTA -- Construction of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights has reached the mid-way point in the heart of downtown Atlanta, between the World of Coke and the Georgia Aquarium.
"We're already booking events for 2014 and 2015," said CEO Doug Shipman. "We have groups that want to rent out the facility in the evening for their events."
The design has changed to keep the $76 million project on budget.
The center will have a floor for civil rights and a floor for human rights, which will explore issues like human trafficking and child labor.
The center will also house the Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers, which will be on public display for the first time.
Right now, they're available only to scholars and only in digital form.
The center is expected to draw 400,000 visitors a year with an economic impact of $50 million a year.
To raise money for educational programs, the center just kicked off a tile campaign.
You can buy a personalized tile for $250 that will go up on a mosaic wall in the lobby.
