SMYRNA, GA -- A fire roared across a Smyrna apartment complex in the middle of the night, leaving eight families without a home on Thanksgiving morning.

Seventeen people were thankful to be unhurt at Mission Galleria Apartments, but were unable to return to their apartments.

"The Red Cross has actually provided shelter so they've given us a hotel to stay in for a couple of days," said Ronald Broadnecks.

Neighbors vowed to collect clothes and food. Firefighters worked to stop the flames from spreading to other apartments, but then came a cold weather problem. The water used to protect other apartments froze, and left many residents trapped in their parking lot until it melted.

It's certainly not the holiday Ronald Broadnecks planned for his three children, however this loss is not a match for his optimism for a better tomorrow.

"We'll just take it one step at a time and hopefully we will have a terrific Christmas," he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
