ATLANTA-- The lines started building days ago outside some Metro Atlanta stores. Shoppers compared waiting in tents in freezing weather to tailgating outside a big game.

It's a shorter wait than usual this year. Macy's, J.C. Penny and Staples will open on Thanksgiving for the first time this year, Toys R Us opens at 5:00pm.  Wal-mart starts holiday deals at 6:00, two hours earlier than last year.

The spread of deals from Thursday has led to the nickname "Gray Thursday".

KRC Research surveyed 500 adults in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving. They asked, "Should retails stores be closed on Thanksgiving? Seventy-six percent of people said they should stay closed.

Do you agree? 

The will be no shopping in three states this Thanksgiving. Rhode Island, Maine, and Massachusetts have "Blue Laws" still on the books banning retails stores from opening on Thanksgiving. There are some exceptions for small stores and sporting good stores, but most remain closed until the wee hours of Black Friday. Efforts in recent years to repeal the laws have failed.
