DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Suspended DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis faced a judge Thursday morning.
Ellis, who is accused of extorting campaign contributions from companies trying to do business with the county, called the 14 felony charges a "political witch hunt" by DA Robert James on Thursday.
The lawyers for Ellis spent the morning accusing James of illegally videotaping Ellis during the investigation and claimed the DA systematically abused the process.
The source of this information came from within the DA's office, according to Ellis' attorney, Craig Gillen.
Gillen went on to say that former Chief of Staff in the DA's office, Don Geary, expressed concerns about the legality of the video.
The state called this an "outrageous" and false allegation.
Last week, he released a YouTube video proclaiming his innocence.
