ATM skimmer found at Dunwoody bank

Dunwoody Police recovered an ATM skimming device at a bank on Sunday.

DUNWOODY, Ga. -- An ATM skimmer was discovered at a DeKalb County bank over the weekend.

The device was found Sunday at the SunTrust on Chamblee-Dunwoody Road.

Dunwoody Police Officer Tim Fecht said the skimmer is held onto the ATM with double-sided tape and looks exactly like the real ATM card slot.

"On the inside, they'll place electronics devices that will read your card prior to the bank's reader reading your card, so your card gets read twice when you enter it in," Fecht said.

Thieves also mount tiny cameras on ATMs to record video of fingers typing in PINs.

The devices are run on batteries. Suspects usually remove them from ATMs after six to eight hours to download and use stolen debit card numbers.

Fecht said banking customers can protect themselves by staying alert.

"When you go to an ATM, see if there's anything suspicious, something no flush or smooth," he said. "And even tug it where you put your card in and see if it pops off."
