ATLANTA (WXIA) -- Tropical Storm Karen formed Thursday morning just off the Yucatan Peninsula, and forecasters say it is expected to move toward the Gulf Coast, possibly becoming a minimal hurricane before landfall.
A Hurricane Watch has been issued for the Gulf Coast from Grand Isle, La., to Indian Pass, Fla. In addition, a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued from west of Grand Isle westward to Morgan City, La., for Lake Maurepas, Lake Pontchartrain, and Metropolitan New Orleans.

A hurricane watch means hurricane conditions are possible in the watch area. Hurricane watches are generally issued about 48 hours before tropical storm force winds are expected in the area. A tropical storm watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours.
As of 11 a.m., ET, Tropical Storm Karen is located about 65 miles northwest of Cabo Catoche, Mexico and about 485 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River. It has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph. TS Karen is moving to the north-northwest at 12 mph. Minimum central pressure is at 1004 millibars or 29.65 inches of pressure.
Tropical Storm Karen's storm track is projected to take it to a landfall early Saturday in the general area of Mobile, Ala. 11Alive Meteorologist Chesley McNeil says that after landfall, the storm is expected to move northeastward through Alabama and into Georgia by Sunday evening.
