Crashes tie up traffic across metro Atlanta

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 18 Oktober 2012 | 23.22

(Georgia Department of Transportation)

ATLANTA -- Many of the traffic incidents that caused headaches and delays for commuters across metro Atlanta Thursday morning have since been cleared.

Traffic is still heavy on northbound Interstate 75/85 between Langford Parkway and Interstate 20. Three left lanes of westbound I-75/85 were blocked at University Avenue due to a four-car crash. Another nearby crash involving an overturned bus has since been cleared.

A crash on southbound I-85 at the I-285 eastbound ramp caused some backups on I-85. Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Chata Spikes said the accident involved a tractor trailer and a car. One person was injured; the extent of the injuries is not yet known.

One left lane was blocked on southbound I-285 at Monroe Drive. Two left lanes were blocked on westbound Highway 78 at Mountain Industrial Boulevard in DeKalb County.

A two-car crash also blocked the center lane of northbound I-75 at Jodeco Road in Henry County.

Officials seek motive in U.S.-Canada border shooting

Vehicles line up to enter the United States at the border crossing between Blaine, Washington and White Rock, British Columbia (Getty Images file)

SEATTLE (AP) - A Canadian border guard shot in her booth at a busy U.S.-Canada crossing north of Seattle remained hospitalized in stable condition Wednesday as investigators worked to determine the identity and motive of the man who wounded her and committed suicide.

The suspect, driving a white van with Washington license plates, shot Officer Lori Bowcock in the neck at 2 p.m. Tuesday as he was entering Canada at the Peace Arch crossing at Blaine. He then died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, investigators said.

Officers soon swarmed the scene, closing the crossing as they interviewed witnesses and searched for clues. Investigators blocked off the area around Bowcock's booth with yellow crime-scene tape and examined the suspect's van, which sat with its back doors open revealing a mattress inside.

Canadian officials estimated they would reopen the crossing Wednesday afternoon.

The British Columbia homicide investigation team handling the probe was treating the case as an attempted murder. Agents with Homeland Security Investigations were assisting by following leads on the U.S. side of the border, said Andrew Munoz, spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He declined to elaborate.

The border crossing about 100 miles north of Seattle is the third-busiest between the U.S. and Canada. Last month, it averaged 9,000 U.S.-bound cars a day, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Drivers were being diverted to other crossings, including the nearby Pacific Highway crossing, where border officers from Peace Arch were reassigned to help deal with the extra travelers, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Mike Milne.

Investigators have been interviewing witnesses and reviewing video.

Kitsap County Sheriff Steve Boyer said Wednesday his office also followed up on leads and checked out a former address for the suspect in Bremerton. Deputy Scott Wilson told The Kitsap Sun that residents there reported the suspect had moved to King County.

The gunman's identity has not been released.

Bowcock worked as a civilian dispatcher at police headquarters in London, Ontario, until last spring, police said. Bowcock was hospitalized in Canada, and her family traveled to be by her side, the Canadian Border Services Agency said Wednesday.

The Peace Arch crossing features a park with a 67-foot-high monument in the form of an arch that connects the U.S. and Canada.

Canadian Brian White told reporters at the scene he was waiting to cross northward when he heard a shot. Guards immediately responded and officials questioned everyone waiting to cross, he said.

Kevin McAllister, assistant general manager at the Peace Portal Golf Course, which is adjacent to the border crossing, said an employee and several guests told him they heard two shots fired.

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire said she spoke to British Columbia Premier Christy Clark and pledged the state's cooperation and help in the investigation.

"This tragedy hits especially close to home, and reminds us all that our public safety officers put their lives on the line every day to protect the rest of us," Gregoire said.

Her remarks were echoed by the president of the Canada Border Services Agency.

"This is a profound reminder of the risks that border services officers assume every day," Luc Portelance said in a statement from Ottawa. "I know that the courage and dedication of our officers are second to none."

First-time jobless claims back up by 46,000

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- First-time claims for unemployment benefits are on a roller coaster. The number snapped back up last week, after falling to a four-year low the week before.

About 388,000 people filed for first-time unemployment benefits in the week ended October 13, up 46,000 from the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday.

The last two weeks have swung dramatically in both directions, with initial claims first dropping to a revised 342,000, the lowest level in four years, and then suddenly popping back up last week.

Economists attribute the volatility to the end of the quarter and the Columbus Day holiday.

"The volatility in the last few weeks appears to reflect seasonal adjustment challenges around the start of a quarter," said Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist for High Frequency Economics.

Economists often prefer to look at a four-week moving average, to smooth out some of the large swings in the data.

That indicator increased to 365,500 last week and has been hovering in the 360,000 to 380,000 range since July. Claims around that level suggest layoffs remain low -- an encouraging sign for the economy -- but don't necessarily mean hiring has picked up.

"The labor market, just like the broader economy, is plodding along at a deliberate pace," said Thomas Simons, money market economist for Jefferies.

Meanwhile, about 3.3 million Americans continued to file for their second week of unemployment benefits in the week ended October 6, the most recent data available.

Twin charged with killing man found in concrete denied bond

William Joseph Cormier III (L) and Christopher Lynn Cormier (R) are charged with concealing death. (Courtesy Winder Police)

WINDER, Ga. -- A judge has denied bond for one twin brother charged in the death of a former newspaper reporter from Florida whose body was found entombed in concrete in the backyard of their father's Winder home.

Last week, authorities charged 31-year-old Christopher and William Cormier with murder in the death of 30-year-old Sean Dugas. The brothers are also charged with concealing a death.

Barrow County Superior Court Judge Penn McWhorter said Thursday that William Cormier did not appear to have significant ties to the community and seemed to be a flight risk.

Christopher Cormier was not at the bond hearing because he is awaiting appointment of a lawyer.

Winder Police discovered Dugas' body after being contacted by investigators in Pensacola who were looking into the former reporter's disappearance. Dugas had last been heard from on Aug. 27.

An autopsy determined Dugas died from blows to the head about a month before his body was found on Oct. 8.

Man wanted for sexually assaulting 2 teens

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Police are looking for a man who reportedly sexually assaulted two teenage girls after telling them he was a police officer.

The assault happened shortly after 11 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the Chevron gas station just outside Aaron's Amphitheatre at Lakewood.

Atlanta Police spokesman John Chafee said the two victims were 16 and 17 years old. They told investigators they had attended a Brad Paisley concert at Lakewood and headed to the gas station afterward, where they encountered the suspect.

Chafee said the victims were urinating behind the gas station when the suspect approached them, told them to stop and claimed to be a police officer. He then tried to "pat down" the teens and asked them to take their clothes off.

The victims determined that the suspect wasn't really a police officer and ran away, Chafee said.

The suspect is described as a white man in his late 30s or early 40s. He is roughly 6 feet tall and has a "scruffy, unshaven face" according to the police report.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call police at 404-546-4260 or Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477. Tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
