Silver Airways to offer flights from Macon to Atlanta, Orlando

MACON, Ga. (AP) - Federal authorities have chosen a Florida airline to provide passenger flights between Macon's airport and Atlanta and Orlando.

The flights by Silver Airways are part of the federal government's Essential Air Service program, which offers subsidies for commercial air service at airports such as Middle Georgia Regional Airport in Macon.

Fort Lauderdale-based Silver Airways operates nearly 200 daily scheduled flights between cities in Florida, The Bahamas, Georgia, Montana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Alabama, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia, according to its website.

Mickey Bowman, Silver Airways' vice president for Essential Air Service, tells the Macon Telegraph that the company is on pace to launch its Macon service on April 1 if all goes according to plans.

"Driving Miss Daisy" home on the market for $1.95 million

ATLANTA -- Twenty-three years ago, this month, Atlanta was the focus of the Academy Awards when "Driving Miss Daisy" won "Best Picture.

The film was written by Pulitzer prize winning Atlanta playwright Alfred Uhry who grew up in the Druid Hills area.

The story deals with the relationship between an elderly Jewish woman and her African-American chauffeur after World War II.

And as of today, the home from the movie, which forever linked Atlanta to Hollywood is, now, up for sale and it's going to the highest bidder.

To some, the home is as defining as Jessica Tandy & Morgan Freeman and as unforgettable as Alfred Uhry's words.

It's located at 922 Lullwater Road in the Druid Hills neighborhoos.

Jeff Hullinger asked, the listing agent for Coldwell Banker Doris Robinson, "How did this home get selected for the movie?"

"When they were looking for a site, they looked at several homes on this street, they wanted this street."

Ms. Robinson is has been selling homes in Druid Hills since 1959. She is a legendary figure in Atlanta business still going strong a half century after selling her first property in the neighborhood.

Built in 1922, the house is a celebration of the era, arched doorways and a black and white marble floor.

So much of this house is recognizable from the movie, the kitchen where so much memorable dialogue was spoken and the small dining areas, where the characters would eat separate and alone.

The beautiful stairs and landing areas is all work of craftsmen from 90 years ago.

Jeff Hullinger said to Ms. Robinson, "whomever purchases this home has the purgative to do whatever they want but renovation would be a crime against Atlanta & the state."

Ms. Robinson replied quickly, "it would be! it would be."

The asking price is $1.95 million dollars.

After the movie first came out in 1989, there was a non stop conga line of cars driving by with people knocking on the front door and windows.

It's still on a bus tour route of famous Atlanta sites.

Do colleges care about your GPA?

(USA TODAY) -- Parents and their high school students are fascinated by the grade point average and what it means in college admissions, but the truth is that a number of colleges and universities are not all that interested.

Admissions officers at some of the nation's most selective colleges, who are now sending acceptance letters for their fall freshman classes, say they barely look at an applicant's GPA.

"It's meaningless," says Greg Roberts, admissions dean at the University of Virginia, ranked as the top public university in this year's 150 Best Value Colleges, published by The Princeton Review and based on academics and affordability.

"It's artificial," says Jim Bock, admissions dean at Swarthmore College, the top private college in The Princeton Review's Best Value rankings. So unimportant is the GPA that Swarthmore doesn't bother calculating it for guidebook publishers.

Some confusion among families is understandable, especially because GPAs can confer bragging rights during high school commencement season. At an Arizona high school last May, a dispute over which of two graduates with the same GPA -- 4.82 -- should be named class valedictorian prompted the school district to scrap the title.

Research consistently shows that a student's high school grades are the best predictor of their likelihood of success in college. Annual surveys by the National Association for College Admission Counseling show that most admissions officials put a high priority on grades -- particularly grades in college-prep courses.

"It's very hard for parents," says Janet Rosier, an independent counselor in Woodbridge, Conn. "They know what they know. They know their student and they know their high school. But they don't really have an understanding of the bigger picture."

She tells them that each college scours high school grades and transcripts according to its own criteria. Swarthmore's Bock, for example, says he looks for evidence that students have taken the most challenging classes they can. University of Florida's admissions staff recalculates student grade point averages based on five academic areas: English, math social science, natural science and foreign language, says Zina Evans, vice president for enrollment management.

Neither The Princeton Review nor U.S. News & World Report factor high school GPAs into their college rankings formulas. The Princeton Review publishes GPAs if schools provide the information, says David Soto, director of content development.

In this year's guide, nearly a third -- 49 -- didn't, including Brown, Columbia, Cornell and Yale. No school listed a high school GPA for its freshman class below a 3.0, or B, average. An even dozen schools list GPAs of 4.0 or higher.

And the number makes a difference for some of them.

"The GPA is very important in our decision-making process," says Robert Bennett, senior associate director of admissions at Clemson, where the average high school GPAs for new freshman catapulted from 3.59 to 4.10 over five years. The range on math scores remained the same, 580-680 out of a possible 800.

A number of factors likely contribute to the increase, he says, including greater access to Advanced Placement courses, which can be weighted more heavily by high schools, and a growing number of applicants. "We're kind of a hot school," Bennett says.

Grade inflation may also play a role, but it matters little, he says. High schools "present their students in the best light," Bennett says. "We want to see their students in the best academic light."

Falling tree on I-20 kills 'kind, wonderful man'

CONYERS, Ga. -- A tree fell on Interstate 20 in Rockdale County Tuesday morning, killing a 60-year-old commuter.

Roy Arndt of Oxford, Ga., died when the tree hit his car.

The wreck happened near Sigman Road at around 6:30 a.m. Westbound lanes were closed for more than two hours.

Rockdale County Sheriff's Investigator Michael Camp said the accident caused a chain-reaction crash. A total of six vehicles were involved in smaller accidents as they tried to avoid hitting the truck, Camp said. No one else suffered any serious injuries.

Everyone who knew Roy Arndt describe him the way a coworker, Robin McGinnish, remembers him: "One of the kindest, finest men you'll ever know."

Arndt was a commercial printer. He worked for Geographics in southeast Atlanta for 34 years.

Arndt drove I-20 every workday between his home in Oxford and Geographics, a 68-mile round trip.

He was in the right-hand lane in Tuesday morning's rains when the tree fell on top of the cab of his pickup truck. An accident report said severe weather conditions caused the tree to fall.

"I mean, it's like the hand of God reaching down and just grabbing him," said Norvin Hagen, Arndt's boss. "I mean, that's such a freak accident."

The nearly 200 employees at Geographics, many of whom worked side by side with Arndt for decades, are grieving.

"Awful lot of these guys are very, very close to him.  And it's just a sad day," Hagen said.

Arndt's grown son, Gabe Arndt, told 11Alive News by phone Tuesday that his parents divorced "about 20 years ago," and Arndt devoted his life to his job and to his year-round produce garden in the yard of his home.

"He loved gardening, he'd come home from work and the first thing he'd do, he'd be out working in his garden," Gabe Arndt said.

Arndt was always calling out to neighbors to come pick some vegetables from his garden.

"Just friendly, real nice," said Virginia Massey, who lives next door with her husband. "He would come out and wave me down and say, 'Ms. Massey, would you like to pick some turnip greens?'"

Robin McGinnis said Arndt was excited when she became interested in gardening and he'd give her helpful tips.

"He had such a nice, quiet, calm, patient demeanor," even when faced with seemingly impossible deadlines at work, McGinnis said.  "Everyone knew Roy, they all knew him.  And they would speak with him and he would always walk over, he visited, he was always so kind.  And he was just a nice, smart, just a wonderful man. I lost my friend.  He was my friend.  He had a lot of knowledge and a lot of kindness and a lot of love."

Roy Arndt is survived by his grown son and daughter, his former wife, his fiancee and many friends.

School bars transgendered 1st grader from using girls' restroom

FOUNTAIN, Colo. (CNN) -- Just like she did during the first half of the school year, first-grader Coy Mathis wants to use the girls' restroom at her Colorado elementary school. But school officials won't let her.

The reason? Coy is transgendered, born with male sex organs but a child who identifies herself as female.

She dressed as a girl for most of last year. And her passport and state-issued identification recognize her as female.

In December, the Fountain-Fort Carson School District informed Coy's parents that Coy would be barred from using the girls' restrooms at Eagleside Elementary in Fountain after winter break.

She could instead use the boys' bathroom, gender-neutral faculty bathrooms or the nurse's bathroom, the district said.

In making the decision, the district "took into account not only Coy but other students in the building, their parents, and the future impact a boy with male genitals using a girls' bathroom would have as Coy grew older," attorney W. Kelly Dude said.

"However, I'm certain you can appreciate that as Coy grows older and his male genitals develop along with the rest of his body, at least some parents and students are likely to become uncomfortable with his continued use of the girls' restroom."

Coy's parents see it differently.

By forcing Coy to use a different bathroom than all the other girls, the school is "targeting her for stigma, bullying and harassment," said Michael Silverman, one of Coy's lawyers and the executive director of the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund.

"Coy's school has the opportunity to turn this around and teach Coy's classmates a valuable lesson about friendship, respect and basic fairness."

On Wednesday, Coy's parents will announce that they will file a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division.

An unstudied group

Transgender children experience a disconnect between their sex, which is anatomy, and their gender, which includes behaviors, roles and activities.

For the general public, transgender identity is a somewhat new concept, though many might recall Chaz Bono, who was born female to entertainers Sonny and Cher and appeared on last year's "Dancing with the Stars," in part, he said, to destigmatize being transgender.

In his 40s, Bono underwent a transition to become a man. He wrote in his book "Transition" that even in his childhood, he had been "aware of a part of me that did not fit."

Comprehensive data and studies about transgender children are rare. The rates of people who are transgender vary from 1 in 30,000 to 1 in 1,000, depending on various international studies.

Some children as young as 3 show early signs of gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder, mental health experts who work with transgender children say.

These children are not intersex -- they do not have a physical disorder or malformation of their sexual organs. The gender issue exists in the brain, though whether it's psychological or physiological is debated by experts.

Many transgender children report feeling discomfort with their gender as early as they can remember.

Gender identity often gets confused with sexual orientation. The difference is that "gender identity is who you are and sexual orientation is who you want to have sex with," said Dr. Johanna Olson, a professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of Southern California who treats transgender children.

When talking about young children around age 3, they're probably not interested in sexual orientation, she said. But experts say some children look like they will be transgender in early childhood, and turn out to be gay, lesbian or bisexual.

Differences in schools

School policies toward transgender students vary across the U.S.

In New York, for example, the law says students can't be discriminated against on the basis of their gender identity.

In Maine, on the other hand, a court ruled in November that a school district did not violate a transgender student's rights when she was told she couldn't use the girl's restroom.

Dude, the attorney, has said there are no Colorado cases that require public schools to permit transgender students to use restrooms of the gender with which they identify.

He added that the Fountain-Fort Carson School District adheres to the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act because "Coy attends class as all other students, is permitted to wear girls' clothes, and is referred to as the parents have requested."

She also has easy access to bathrooms other than the girls' restroom, Dude said.

Coy's case will be the first to challenge such a restriction under the state's anti-discrimination act, the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund said.

For now, the first-grader is being home-schooled.

NFL investigating whether prospect was asked about sexual orientation

(CNN) -- The National Football League is investigating whether draft prospect Nick Kasa was questioned about his sexual orientation during a recent scouting combine, a spokesman said Wednesday.

"Any team or employee that inquires about impermissible subjects or makes an employment decision based on such factors is subject to league discipline," said NFL spokesman Greg Aiello.

League policy states that teams "neither consider nor inquire about sexual orientation in the hiring process," Aiello said. "In addition, there are specific protections in our collective bargaining agreement with the players that prohibit discrimination against any player, including on the basis of sexual orientation."

Kasa, who played tight end at the University of Colorado, told CNN earlier Wednesday that during the combine, he was asked: "Do you have a girlfriend? Are you married? Do you like girls?"

"Those kind of things, and it was kind of weird," he told CNN. "But like they would ask you with a straight face, and it's a pretty weird experience altogether." Kasa did not say who asked him those questions.

NFL.com said that NFL teams "try to catch prospects off-guard when they interview them at the NFL Scouting Combine." The combine is a skills audition for NFL scouts and coaches before the draft, which this year will be held April 25 to 27.

Three years ago, however, the combine experienced controversy when Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland asked Dez Bryant, now a Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, whether Bryant's mother was a prostitute. Ireland was "roundly criticized," NFL.com said.

Livestrong head says charity will survive after Armstrong

CHICAGO (AP) - The president of a cancer charity founded by Lance Armstrong says the organization will persevere in the wake of the cyclist's admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

The Livestrong Foundation's president, Doug Ulman, is scheduled to deliver what the organization describes as a "major 'State of the Foundation' speech" Thursday in Chicago.

The foundation released excerpts of Ulman's remarks in advance in which he says Livestrong's success "has never been based on one person" and that the group will "absolutely" survive.

Armstrong left the charity recently, saying he didn't want his association to damage the foundation's ability to raise money and continue its advocacy programs for cancer victims.

Originally called the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the cyclist created the charity a year after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

New cars increasingly out of reach for many Americans

(CNBC) -- Looking to buy a new car, truck or crossover? You may find it more difficult to stretch the household budget than you expected, according to a new study that finds median-income families in only one major U.S. city actually can afford the typical new vehicle.

The typical new vehicle is now more expensive than ever, averaging $30,500 in 2012, according to TrueCar.com data, and heading up again as makers curb the incentives that helped make their products more affordable during the recession when they were desperate for sales.

According to the 2013 Car Affordability Study by Interest.com, only in Washington could the typical household swing the payments, the median income there running $86,680 a year. At the other extreme, Tampa, Fla., was at the bottom of the 25 large cities included in the study, with a median household income of $43,832.

The study looked at a variety of household expenses, such as food and housing, and when it comes to purchasing a new vehicle, it considered more than just the basic purchase price, down payment and monthly note, factoring in such essentials as taxes and insurance.

Bottom line? A buyer in the capital can purchase a car with a sticker price of $31,940, slightly more than the new vehicle average for the 2013 model year and about what it would cost for a mid-range Ford Fusion sedan or a stripped-down BMW X1 crossover. The buyer in Tampa? They'll just barely cover the cost of a basic Kia Rio, with $14,516 to spend.

"If you live in New York City or San Francisco, you're probably going to have to pay a lot for housing, but you don't have to pay a lot for a car," said Mike Sante, the managing editor of Interest.com, a financial decision-making website.

Atlanta hovers just above the bottom five on the list in 18th place, with an affordable purchase price level of $19,122.

Affordability has been a matter of growing concern for the auto industry in recent years as prices have continued to move upward. Even the most basic of today's cars are generally loaded with features that were once found on high-line models a few decades back - if they were available at all - such as air conditioning, power windows, airbags and electronic stability control, as well as digital infotainment systems. They also have to meet ever tougher federal safety, emissions and mileage standards that have added thousands to the typical price tag.

"The average compact car of today has the features of a midsize model somebody might be trading in - but it may be just as expensive," said David Sargent, director of automotive operations for J.D. Power and Associates.

That is one reason why many buyers have been downsizing in recent years, said Bill Fay, general manager of Toyota, though he added that "there is still a lot of affordability in the marketplace."

Perhaps, but industry planners have come to recognize that they are targeting a much smaller segment of the American public than in decades past. That's one reason why most manufacturers are offering more downsized models.

They also are working with their dealers to offer certified pre-owned programs where buyers can stretch their budget by purchasing a two- or three-year-old vehicle that has gone through an extensive inspection and, if necessary, repairs and replacements. Such vehicles may cost slightly more than a conventional used model but usually include a like-new warranty.

While the typical new vehicle will likely nudge up this year, Interest.com editor Sante stressed that car costs are one of the most controllable parts of a household's budget. "You're better off driving something more affordable and saving or investing the difference."

If the typical new car costs $30,550, with an average monthly payment of $550, the five cities most able to meet - or come close - are:

Comers to appear in court in alleged abuse case

DALLAS, Ga. -- A Georgia couple accused of confining their teenage son to a bedroom for years with little food is set to appear in court.

Paulding County Court administrator Frank Baker says Paul and Sheila Comer, the stepfather and mother of Mitch Comer, were set for a court appearance Thursday.

The couple has been in custody since mid-September, after 18-year-old Mitch Comer was found wandering a Los Angeles bus station Sept. 11 and told police he had suffered years of abuse. Charges against the Comers include cruelty to children and false imprisonment.

Unione Europea, piano di investimento per lo sviluppo di reti 5G

Entro il 2020 il traffico mobile mondiale crescerà di circa 33 volte rispetto allo scenario fotografato nel 2010. In quest'arco temporale l'accesso a Internet avverrà prevalentemente mediante dispositivi wireless come smartphone, tablet, macchine e sensori, richiedendo tecnologie più efficienti ed onnipresenti per la circolazione del traffico dati. Oggi ci sono 1,2 miliardi di utenti di banda larga mobile, un numero che cresce di centinaia di milioni all'anno.

Una nuova ondata di progetti di ricerca permetterà di portare le tecnologie a banda larga mobile nelle vite quotidiane degli europei. Attualmente vi sono otto nuvi progetti di ricerca EU che si rivolgono alle architetture e alle funzionalità necessarie per lo sviluppo delle reti 5G.

Le grosse realtà industriali stanno unendo le forze con il mondo accademico e gli istituti di ricerca. Tra le realtà coinvolte vi sono gli operatori di rete (British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom/Orange, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Portugal Telecom), i produttori di dispositivi e apparati (Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, Thales Communications), SAP quale principale fornitore di software business e anche un produttore automobilistico come BMW.

Guardando al passato, gli investimenti dell'Europa per lo sviluppo delle reti 4G ed oltre sono arrivati fino a 700 milioni di euro nel periodo tra il 2007 ed il 2013, la metà dei quali allocati per lo sviluppo di tecnologie wireless.

I passati investimenti EU nella ricerca hanno portato allo sviluppo di molte tecnologie che diamo oggi per scontate. Si pensi allo standard GSM, usato dall'80% delle reti mobile attuali, e tecnologie utilizzate negli standard 3G/UMTS e 4G/LTE.

Xbox next-gen: Microsoft nega coinvolgimento in raid polizia

Microsoft ha negato ogni tipo di coinvolgimento nelle indagini della polizia australiana e dell'Fbi e nel susseguente raid nella casa di SuperDae. "Microsoft non ha avviato l'indagine Fbi su questa persona, come è stato erroneamente riportato da alcuni media", ha detto un portavoce di Microsoft.

Il nome di SuperDae è stato collegato all'asta di un presunto kit di sviluppo di Xbox di prossima generazione, conosciuto come Durango. Il dev kit è stato messo in vendita a 50 mila dollari australiani, pari a 39 mila euro circa.

Nonostante Microsoft smentisca il suo coinvolgimento, un documento riportato da TheTechGame, che sembra essere proprio il mandato della polizia australiana, menziona la compagnia di Redmond come parte lesa. TheTechGame sostiene di aver contattato la polizia australiana, che avrebbe confermato l'autenticità del mandato.

Secondo altre fonti, SuperDae sarebbe stato recentemente contattato da un funzionario della sicurezza di Microsoft. La visita si è verificata in seguito alla fuga di notizie su Durango, delle quali sembra essere responsabile proprio SuperDae, oltre che all'asta su eBay già menzionata.

Dae inoltre sosteneva di essere entrato in possesso del kit di sviluppo dopo aver ottenuto l'accesso ai server di Microsoft e creato un account sul sito web interno rivolto al Programma per gli Sviluppatori Xbox. Ha poi ordinato una versione per gli sviluppatori utilizzando l'account falso.

Sempre più tablet, dai 7 ai 10 pollici, per il 2013 di Acer

Che le vendite di tablet siano uno dei nuovi mercati verso il quale i produttori asiatici si stiano orientando non sorprende. Le difficoltà del settore dei PC, capace in ogni caso di elevati volumi complessivi, spinge i produttori storici a differenziare la propria offerta con proposte smartphone e tablet.

Per questo motivo non devono stupire i piani di Acer, che prevede per il 2013 di vendere ben 10 milioni di tablet con un incremento rispetto al 2012 di oltre il 400%.

Digitimes evidenzia come accanto al nuovo tablet Iconia B1, modello basato su sistema operativo Android dotato di display da 7 pollici di diagonale, troveremo presto al debutto due nuove soluzioni caratterizzate da display da 8 e 10 pollici di diagonale.

Non solo Android per Acer, che continua a promuovere tablet basati su sistema operativo Windows. Le stime di vendita indicano infatti 7 milioni di tablet   basati sull'OS di Google, e i 3 restanti abbinati a sistema operativo Windows. Non sappiamo quanti di questi ultimi saranno in versione Windows RT ma la sensazione è che i vari partner siano orientati a non promuovere con particolare enfasi Windows RT, lasciando che sia la stessa Microsoft con Surface RT a offrire sul mercato questo tipo di piattaforma.

Il target delle soluzioni tablet di Acer rimane quello di fascia medio bassa, così come testimoniato dal listino di Iconia B1. Per i modelli a 8 pollici di prossimo debutto la fonte indica listini attesi attorno ai 150 dollari USA, cifra che dovrebbe salire a circa 200 dollari per i modelli con display da 10 pollici di diagonale.

Dispositivi portatili che predicono il futuro, un brevetto di Apple

Il sito web Appleinsider ha individuato un brevetto riconosciuto ad Apple che descrive un sistema di sensori ed elementi di interpretazione allo scopo di attivare automaticamente funzioni di un dispositivo portatile a seconda del cambiamento di determinate condizioni dell'ambiente in cui si trova.

Il brevetto, titolato "Electronic device with automatich mode switching", raccoglie una serie di proprietà intellettuali già esistenti ed alcune in attesa di riconoscimento, correlate alla gestione dei sensori per la creazione di un sitema automatizzato in grado di anticipare le esigenze dell'utente.

Il sistema, interpretando varie informazioni (temperatura, illuminazione ambientale, pressione, vibrazioni), può anticipare quale tipo di funzione è probabile che un utente stia per compiere. Il dispositivo può, ad esempio, attivare la funzione di vibrazione sulla base dell'illuminazione ambientale e dell'orientamento del dispositivo, senza che l'utente debba effettuare alcuna operazione.

Nella documentazione allegata al brevetto si legge: "Il dispositivo elettronico portatile è pronto ad eseguire una funzione quando l'utente desidera utilizzare questa funzione. L'utente non deve compiere alcuna operazione aggiuntiva, come la selezione di voci nelll'interfaccia o l'azionamento di un pulsante o interruttore".

I dati raccolti dai sensori vengono trasmessi ad un "situational awareness module" che li interpreta applicandoli alle cosiddette "truth tables". Si tratta di tabelle utilizzate per mappare determinate funzioni a determinati eventi registrati dai sensori, come ad esempio quando un utente regola il volume del dispositivo, e che pertanto servono come esempio di come un input debba essere gestito in un momento successivo. Il sistema può essere personalizzabile dall'utente, impostando i parametri del sensore e quali funzioni debbano essere attivate a seconda degli eventi.

Il brevetto indica numerose possibili implementazioni, come la riproduzione di brani musicali a seconda di come il dispositivo viene maneggiato, il passaggio (già citato) al modo vibrazione a seconda della luminosità ambientale e la regolazione del volume sulla base del rumore dell'ambiente.

Xbox di nuova generazione: presentazione a fine aprile?

"Già da tempo è diventato noto che anche Microsoft, come Sony, presenterà la sua nuova console prima dell'E3."

Rob Crossley, giornalista videludico di Cvg, ha scritto sul suo profilo Twitter che Microsoft terrà un evento di presentazione della nuova Xbox il prossimo 26 aprile. Crossley sostiene di aver appreso l'informazione da una fonte fidata.

Già da tempo circolavano voci a proposito del fatto che sia Microsoft che Sony avrebbero annunciato le rispettive nuove console prima dell'E3.

Le presentazioni in anticipo rispetto al noto game show servono per sollevare l'hype sulla next-gen, ma poi si potranno toccare con mano i nuovi sistemi solamente a Los Angeles. Crossley, di fatto, definisce "intelligente" la scelta di Sony di non mostrare il form factor della nuova console, senza svelare dunque subito tutte le carte.

Secondo le informazioni divulgate al PlayStation Meeting dello scorso 20 febbraio, PS4 sarà dotata di CPU a 8 core con architettura x86-64 AMD "Jaguar" e di GPU AMD Radeon 7970M. Stando a precedenti indiscrezioni, anche la nuova Xbox sarà costruita su architettura "Jaguar".

Leica M nei negozi da questa settimana. Prezzo? 6200€

"Mostrata durante Photokina 2012, la nuova Leica M arriva il 28 febbraio sul mercato italiano con un prezzo superiore ai seimila Euro."

Leica è sicuramente uno dei marchi che più di altri è legato a doppio filo con la storia della fotografia. Amate da moltissimi maestri dell'obiettivo le macchine fotografiche Leica M hanno catturato nel corso degli anni molte delle immagini che si sono poi trasformate in vere e proprie icone del secolo passato. Il produttore tedesco, tre anni dopo l'uscita di Leica M9, porta ora sul mercato la nuova Leica M.

Presentata al pubblico durante la fiera del Photokina di Settembre, Leica M sarà disponibile sul mercato italiano presso i negozi specializzati Leica dal 28 febbraio. La nuova nata dal bollino rosso è caratterizzata dall'unione di elementi tipici della serie M, come design, materiali utilizzati e telemetro, con altri del tutto inediti. Il sensore, sviluppato appositamente dall'azienda belga CMOSIS, è un CMOS pieno formato da 24 megapixel; per la prima volta un modello della serie M offre inoltre il Live View e la possibilità di utilizzare un mirino elettronico con funzione di focus peaking. Tra le novità anche la possibilità di registrare filmati FullHD a 25fps o 24fps.

L'elaborazione dei dati catturati è affidata al processore Leica Maestro ed il display posteriore è un TFT da 3" e 920.000 punti. Disponibile sia nella colorazione nera che in quella classicamente cromata, tra gli elementi tipici della tradizione Leica si colloca anche il cartellino del prezzo: 6200 Euro (sì, solo corpo).

Diablo III per PlayStation 4: no connessione a internet e no gioco cross-platform

Una delle principali criticità delle versioni PC/Mac di Diablo III riguarda il fatto che non è possibile giocare offline neanche in single player. Pare che questo problema non si ripresenterà con le versioni PlayStation 3 e PlayStation 4 dell'action rpg, annunciate al PlayStation Meeting del 20 febbraio.

In un'intervista a GameTrailers, John Hight di Sony ha infatti parlato di gioco offline con la nuova versione di Diablo III. Ha aggiunto che sarà possibile giocare in quattro sullo stesso schermo senza split-screen: semplicemente la telecamerà inquadrerà una porzione di mappa maggiore.

Inoltre, Blizzard conferma che i giocatori su console non potranno interagire con i giocatori su PC nelle stesse sessioni di gioco. "Anche se pensiamo che il gioco cross-platform sarebbe fantastico, in questo momento non abbiamo piani per permettere la connettività tra PlayStation Network e Battle.net", scrive il community manager Vaeflare sul forum di Diablo III. "Quindi i personaggi del vostro account PlayStation Network e quelli dell'account Battle.net rimarranno separati".

"In termini di supporto ai controller analogici su PC, non abbiamo alcun piano in questo momento. Allo stesso modo, dal momento che Diablo III per console è stato progettato per funzionare con un controller, la versione PlayStation di Diablo III non supporta mouse USB o la tastiera".

Non c'è al momento una data di rilascio definitiva per le versioni PS3 e PS4 di Diablo III. La versione per PS3 di Diablo III verrà, inoltre, presentata al pubblico durante il PAX East, che si terrà presso il Boston Convention and Exhibition Center dal 22 al 24 marzo.

Gaming portatile: i download di App superano i titoli per le console portatili

App Annie ed IDC hanno inaugurato Portable Gaming Report, un resoconto trimestrale che offre uno spaccato sul mondo del gaming portatile, evidenziando le differenze tra i download di applicazioni per i dispositivi mobile e le consegne dei software confezionati, e dal quale emerge come esso sia molto più profittevole e remunerativo per gli sviluppatori di app rispetto a quelli dedicati alle console di gioco portatile.

In particolare nel report si osserva come nel corso del quarto trimestre 2012 la spesa consumer combinata sui giochi venduti tramite App Store e Google Play sia superiore a quella dedicata all'acquisto di titoli dedicati su console di gioco portatili. L'analisi mostra però come la spesa per i titoli dedicati sia abbastanza soggetta alla stagionalità: è nel mese di dicembre, dove tipicamente si concentrano gli acquisti delle festività natalizie, che è stato generato il 60% della spesa trimestrale per i titoli dedicati alle console di gioco portatili.

Un ulteriore dato che fa emergere alcune interessanti dinamiche del mondo gaming è rappresentato dalla distribuzione geografica delle spese: gli acquisti gaming su Google Play hanno trovato più spazio nella regione Asia-Pacific, mentre per iOS si osserva un sostanziale pareggio tra mercato nord americano e area APAC. Gli acquisti di titoli per console portatili sono invece distribuiti in maniera abbastanza omogenea sui mercati nord americano, dell'Europa Occidentale e asiatico.

Lewis Ward, gaming research manager per IDC, osserva inoltre: "Abbiamo osservato con sorpresa che Apple e Nintendo, sebbene i loro titoli più popolari ed i loro modelli di business siano abbastanza differenti, sono abbastanza vicini in termini di spesa consumer aggregata sul software gaming nel corso del quarto trimestre 2012".

Nikon versa le royalties a Microsoft per le proprie Coolpix con Android

"Microsoft batte cassa anche con Nikon, dopo che l'azienda nipponica ha presentato circa un anno fa la fotocamera Coolpix S800c con sistema operativo Android"

Nomi raramente affiancati, quelli di Nikon e Microsoft, ma il mondo della tecnologia è più che mai in continua evoluzione, come testimoniano i numerosi dispositivi che si stanno pian piano trasformando in veri e propri PC in miniatura. Non fanno eccezione alcuni modelli di macchina fotografica, come per esempio la Nikon Coolpix S800c, che sfrutta come sistema operativo il ben noto Android di casa Google.

L'utilizzo della piattaforma Android permette alla fotocamera di utilizzare tutte le app relative al mondo della fotografia, avendo accesso al market Google Play, oltre a poter condividere sul web gli scatti così manipolati, senza l'esigenza di passare per un PC, uno smartphone o un tablet.

Usare Android però significa anche pagare royalties a Microsoft, in quanto l'azienda di Redmond detiene alcuni brevetti e proprietà intellettuali che offre in concessione dietro adeguato pagamento. Non si ha notizia dell'entità della cifra che Nikon ha versato a Microsoft (sicuramente non sono cifre alte, in quanto proporzionali ai modelli venuti). Certo, rimangono i dubbi di sempre e le perplessità che nascono dalla concessione di brevetti apparentemente astratti, ma il problema non può certo essere dibattuto in questa sede.

Samsung Galaxy S IV: lancio ufficiale il 14 Marzo

Samsung prepara il debutto del proprio nuovo smartphone top di gamma, Galaxy S IV, segnalando ufficialmente al Mobile World Congress 2013 quanto già emerso in forma ufficiosa nei giorni scorsi.

Il nuovo modello della famiglia Galaxy verrà presentato dall'azienda coreana il prossimo 14 Marzo, con un evento organizzato a New York. Rappresentanti dell'azienda hanno dato solo questa informazione, evitando di fornire qualsiasi altro dettaglio sulle caratteristiche tecniche di questo terminale.

L'attesa per Galaxy S IV è molto elevata: questo modello andrà a scontrarsi con iPhone 5 di Apple, presumibilmente introducendo varie novità in modo simile a quanto avvenuto con il precedente debutto di Galaxy S III avvenuto lo scorso anno.

Galaxy S IV dovrà quantomeno replicare il successo di mercato ottenuto sin dal debutto con Galaxy S III. Negli ultimi 3 mesi del 2012 questo modello ha totalizzato vendite per circa 15,4 milioni di pezzi, dato che aveva preceduto i 18 milioni di terminali venduti nel corso del terzo trimestre 2012.

Aggiornamento firmware per Olympus OM-D E-M5: ora disponibile la versione 1.6

"Olympus rilascia un aggiornamento per il firmware dedicato a OM-D E-M5 e richiama alcuni modelli che potrebbero creparsi in prossimità di una vite"

Che Olympus abbia investito molto su OM-D E-M5 non è certo un mistero. La EVIL top di gamma della casa ha ormai compiuto un anno di vita e il produttore ha rilasciato negli scorsi giorni la versione 1.6 del firmware si cui è basata la fotocamera.

Si tratta in realtà di un minor update che non introduce alcuna nuova funzione ma si limita a correggere due bug che occasionalmente affliggevano la senzaspecchio: una lettura errata dell'esposizione quando la fotocamera è impostata ad ISO 2000 o più e un bug che non consentiva in alcuni casi di effettuare correttamente lunghe esposizioni.

L'aggiornamento è scaricabile dal sito della casa a questo indirizzo o tramite il softwarte proprietario Olympus Camera Updater. Il produttore ha inoltre richiamato alcuni esemplari prodotti i quali potrebbero creparsi in prossimità di una vite fissata nella cornice del display posteriore. Gli esemplari che potrebbero essere difettati commercializzati in Europa hanno le matricole BEK501001-BEK508887 (versione nera) e BF4501001-BF4503865 (versione silver). In caso si possedesse una macchina difettata è possibile contattare la casa stessa che si adopererà per la riparazione: la crepa potrebbe infatti minare la resistenza del corpo agli spruzzi d'acqua.

Apple lavora ad una tastiera virtuale a tasti modificabili

Il sito web Appleinsider ha individuato una nuova richiesta di brevetto depositata da Apple che descrive un particolare metodo ideato per migliorare l'accuratezza della tastiera touch presente nei suoi iDevices, basato sul ridimensionamento automatico e in tempo reale dei tasti sulla base dei pattern di digitazione dell'utente.

Il brevetto descrive un "touch correcting keypad" di fatto molto simile all'attuale tastiera software presente in iOS e provvista di un'impostazione denominata "Typo-Adaptable Keyboard" che consente di modificare la forma e la dimensione dei tasti e lo spazio tra di essi, allo scopo di compensare quegli errori causati poprio dallo stile di digitazione dell'utente.

In questo modo il sistema va ad alterare sia la rappresentazione visuale dei tasti, sia le zone di input riconosciute dal dispositivo. Varie rappresentazioni grafiche allegate alla documentazione mostrano il concetto all'opera: in un disegno viene rappresentato il tasto shift di maggiori dimensioni, con la contemporanea riduzione dei tasti A e Q, in un altro disegno si osserva l'aumento dello spazio che separa el lettere A e Q mentre in un altro disegno ancora si vede il tasto S con una forma abbastanza inusuale e una parallela riduzione delle dimensioni del tasto W.

Il concetto potrebbe concretizzarsi in uno dei prossimi rilasci di iOS andando a mgliorare l'esperienza d'uso del dispositivo e aiutando a risolvere alcuni dei comuni inconvenienti che si verificano con la digitazione di una tastiera virtuale, sprovvista di un feedback tattile.

Prime immagini di Diablo III per PlayStation 4

Dopo mesi di rumor e di notizie "rubate", sappiamo adesso che era tutto vero: Diablo III arriverà su console. Chris Metzen di Blizzard Entertainment lo ha annunciato durante il PlayStation Meeting in cui è stata rivelata PlayStation 4. Il gioco arriverà sulla console next-gen e anche su PlayStation 3, piattaforma sulla quale è già in grado di girare regolarmente.

"Molti di voi si staranno chiedendo perché uno sviluppatore vecchio stampo PC fa parte di questo evento. Vi annunciamo che Blizzard e Sony hanno raggiunto una collaborazione strategica grazie alla quale conquisteremo il mondo. Ah ... fosse così facile", ha detto Mezten durante il PlayStation Meeting.

"Abbiamo iniziato sulle console e poi ci siamo spostati sul PC. Siamo rimasti per tanti anni su questa piattaforma ma ora vogliamo tornare sulle console", dice Metzen. "Abbiamo quindi valutato quali dei nostri giochi potessero essere portati su console".

Blizzard adesso completa l'annuncio con il comunicato ufficiale e con la prima gallery di screenshot, riportata in calce alla news. Diablo III per PS3/PS4 si baserà sulla versione PC e beneficerà di tutti gli ultimi aggiornamenti, inclusi i livelli d'eccellenza, il Congegno demoniaco, la Potenza dei mostri, le Schermaglie. Questa versione sarà dotata di controlli personalizzabili, una nuova interfaccia utente e una prospettiva dinamica della visuale, fa sapere Blizzard.

La versione per PS3 di Diablo III verrà, inoltre, presentata al pubblico durante il PAX East, che si terrà presso il Boston Convention and Exhibition Center dal 22 al 24 marzo.

Kim Dotcom offre il servizio MEGA alle universitÃ

A circa un mese dalla presentazione di MEGA, il servizio di storage cloud realizzato da Kim Dotcom fornito anche in forma gratuita, gode già di un notevole successo. Sono oltre 3 milioni gli utenti attualmente registrati e 125 milioni i file caricati, numeri che attestano in maniera chiara il gradimento da parte del pubblico per l'ultima creazione dell'enorme Kim.

Il personaggio però, lo sappiamo, ama fare parlare di sé e non vede l'ora di estendere ulteriormente il servizio, non fosse altro per far venire un travaso di bile per la rabbia ai nemici dell'FBI e affini. Recentemente MEGA è stato scelto da una importante società USA come servizio di storage cloud, fatto che ha fatto venire un'altra idea a Kim Dotcom. Perché non offrire un servizio del genere a tutte le università che ne faranno richiesta?

The Next Web ci fornisce inoltre qualche dettaglio in più: MEGA verrà offerto alle università in versione White Label, ovvero con possibilità di completa personalizzazione in termini di brand. Snapdragon 200 e 400, le proposte Qualcomm per l'entry level e la fascia media

Anticipando il Mobile World Congress di Barcellona, Snapgragon annuncia un paio di novità che vedremo nel corso dell'anno. Come riportato da Cnet, vi saranno due nuovi SoC Qualcomm che troveremo integrati in smartphone e tablet entro la fine dell'anno, che andranno ad arricchire il listino dell'azienda già presente sul mercato con Snapdragon 600 e 800.

Target di Qualcomm questa volta non è la fascia alta e medio-alta del mercato, quanto quella dei modelli entry-level e di metà listino. I nomi commerciali delle due soluzioni riprendono quanto già visto in passato, confermandosi delle soluzioni Snapdragon ma con valore numerico inferiore, 200 e 400.

Snapdragon 200, quello per i modelli entry-level, sarà comunque un SoC di tutto rispetto: al chip ARM Cortex A5 quad-core (con frequenza massima di 1,4GHz) sarà affiancata la GPU Adreno 203, che renderà gli apparecchi che ne faranno adozione compatibili con la gestione di flussi HD. Altre specifiche parlano del supporto a fotocamere fino a 8Mpixel e alla doppia SIM card.

Snapdragon 400 innalza le caratteristiche tecniche, come è possibile immaginare tenendo in considerazione i modelli di fascia media che ha in target. L'offerta è più articolata, in quanto i SoC Snapdragon 400 potranno essere dotati di CPU dual-core fino a 1,7GHz o quad-core fino a 1,4GHz. Di rango superiore è il sottosistema grafico, costituito dal chip Adreno 305 GPU, con il quale sarà possibile gestire flussi video 1080p. Anche per Snapdragon 400 ritroviamo la compatibilità con sistemi a doppia SIM, mentre si aggiunge la funzionalità Miracast e la possibilità di gestire fotocamere fino a 13,5Mpixel.

Aliens Colonial Marines si è rivelato un gioco fortemente insufficiente, nonostante le elevatissime aspettative della community di giocatori, confortata dal fatto che il gioco è affidato alla software house di Borderlands, Gearbox Software. In questo video esaminiamo i principali elementi di debolezza del nuovo shooter.

Aliens Colonial Marines è ambientato 17 settimane dopo quello che è ancora oggi riconosciuto come uno dei principali capolavori del genere di fantascienza in tutta la storia del cinema, ovvero Aliens Scontro Finale (1986).

La nave spaziale di classe Conestoga Uss Sephora capta una richiesta di assistenza del caporale Hicks, ma al suo arrivo, l'equipaggio scopre subito che qualcosa è andato storto. La Uss Sulaco, cioè la nave sulla quale erano imbarcati Ellen Ripley, Hicks e Newt, è tornata ad orbitare il pianeta LV-426 invece del pianeta Fury-161, come avrebbe dovuto. I marines della Sephora perlustrano la nave e cominciano a scoprire un mistero di cui sembra implicata anche la multinazionale Weyland-Yutani. I marines, quindi, devono scoprire il perché dell'attacco così aggressivo della multinazionale, mentre il focus dello scontro si sposta proprio sugli umani piuttosto che sugli xenomorfi.

Bernie Marcus to Lawmakers: Close the Autism Gap

ATLANTA, Ga. -- In much the same way The Home Depot transformed home improvement, the Marcus Autism Center transformed the lives of families and their children. Both are the brainchilds of Bernie Marcus, a self made billionaire philanthropist who saw a need and met it.

"A lot of middle class people had a child and didn't know where to go."

For a man who seeks logical solutions to real problems, the struggle for House Bill 309 is a frustrating topic.

"It doesn't make any sense. It just doesn't make any sense to me."

Marcus, a republican who speaks his mind -- says party politics have no place in this decision.

"This is disgraceful for this state. Thirty-two other states -- democratic, republican states, have all voted for this. Why is Georgia not doing it? It doesn't make sense to me."

Marcus singled out the lobbyists fighting hard to kill the bill.

"The insurance lobbies obviously don't want to cover it and yet we know the cost is only 32 cents per month per member. And they're fighting it tooth and nail. I put it into Home Depot years ago and I will tell you, it didn't break Home Depot."

Opponents of the bill say adding 32 cents opens the door to other causes that want other mandates, but to Marcus it's simple and he called Governor Deal.

Jaye Watson asked, "Did Governor Deal tell you he would support it, that he would try to push it, put in a good word?" Marcus answered, "He said all of those things. He said if the legislature passes it that he would support it and sign the legislation."

Marcus says the middle class is getting hurt worst of all by trying to help their children. "I've heard of people that have mortgaged their houses, have gone into bankruptcy are now living in apartments because they've lost their houses, because they can't take care of the children. Eventually these people will end up being the ward of the state also. Ultimately the state is going to pay for it."

To Bernie Marcus the solution is to pass the bill, get children help, get them independent. He says this solution saves money -- saves kids, saves families.

"My God, from a humanistic standpoint the destruction that this is causing on families and the emotional impact it's having on families how could you not do this as an american who's supposed to have a heart?"

When asked how he would feel if the bill doesn't pass, Marcus answered, "I'm going to be very disappointed in this state. I'm going to be disappointed in the legislators and everybody involved and I think it would be disgraceful and I think when people go to the polls next year they need to start thinking about this."

5 killed in Thomson plane crash

THOMSON, Ga. -- Five people are confirmed dead after a small plane crashed in Thomson-McDuffie County Wednesday night. The pilot, one of only two survivors, managed to walk away from the wreckage.

The Hawker Beechcraft 390/Premier One jet crashed shortly after 8 p.m. at Thomson-McDuffie Regional Airport. 

"It looks like it may have just overshot the runway, just barely missing a manufacturing building and crashing in the woods," said McDuffie County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Ronnie Williamson.

The plane came to rest in a field behind a factory about a mile east of the airport.

"It was demolished," said McDuffie County Sheriff Logan Marshall said.

The crash sparked a brush fire and knocked out power to the area.

"It was like a boom," said Rhonda Bouthry, who lives near the airport. "The power flickered on and off. It wasn't off but about 20 minutes."

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said seven people were on board the flight from John Tune Airport in Nashville. A male passenger was the other survivor.

Bergen said the plane departed from Nashville at 7:28 p.m and was registered to a limited liability corporation in Wilmington, Delaware.

The Augusta Chronicle reports that the plane was connected to The Vein Guys medical clinic in Augusta. The clinic also has an office in Buckhead.

QT issues apology after service dog harassed

MCDONOUGH, Ga. -- Princess leads a life of purpose. She's a German Shepherd outfitted in a camouflage vest, gentle leader leash and enough patches to give local Girl Scouts a run for their money.

She's a service dog for Wyatt Fox. He has autism and suffers from other medical problems.

His mom, Cory Fox, often starts her day with coffee at the QuikTrip off Interstate 75 exit 216. But this week, she was interrupted while filling up. When a QT manager approached, she knew it was probably about the dog, and she's used to answering questions.

"I said 'it's a service dog', and he said 'we have food in here and you can't be in here'," Fox said. "The dog is clearly marked by vests and five patches."

But she said the manager didn't understand, and continued harassing them.

"As the door was shutting, he was still hollering at us, but he never followed us out of the store," she said.

When 11Alive told QT corporate about the incident, they sent us this statement:

If QT made a mistake, we apologize.
We recognize all service dogs in our stores.
Our training manuals reflect this.
If we must, we may go back and retrain the employee so he understands our procedure.

"I'm very open to educating people as long as they approach me the right way. I will tell you what the dog does freely. I will tell you about service dogs, but he just continued to berate us and tell us we weren't welcome," Fox said.

Man's body found in Cascade apartment

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Police are looking for suspects in a Thursday morning shooting death.

The unidentified victim's body was found shortly before 4 a.m. inside a unit at the Hidden Village apartment complex on Landrum Drive SW, according to Atlanta Police Sgt. Greg Lyon.

Atlanta Police spokesman Paul Guerrucci said investigators believe the victim was in his early 30s. He had been shot once in the back of the head.

Police are now canvassing the neighborhood to gather more information about the shooting.

Adventure in the forecast for special needs boy

ATLANTA -- Each year Bert's Big Adventure takes children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families on an all expenses paid trip to Disney World. Thirteen children are going this year. They'll hit the road Thursday. Zach Tuttle is one of them with a special 11Alive connection.

"You know, being in the special needs life is being in an exclusive club," Jason Tuttle says with an ironic smile.

It's a club he and his wife, Jennifer, joined when their son, Zach, was born with a rare disease: Eagle Barrett Syndrome, nicknamed prune belly.

"At 20 weeks into the pregnancy, we knew something was wrong," Jennifer said.

"He was born with little to no stomach muscles. He has a smaller lung capacity. He is developmentally delayed," Jason explained.
Zach is recovering from a respiratory infection, released from the hospital just in time for Bert's Big Adventure. The family of four has never been on a vacation together. Jason said they've been put-off by the stories of TSA harassment from other special needs families forced to travel with extra medical equipment and medicines.

Zach and his little sister, Samantha are non-verbal. Connecting with them is a journey in frustration.

"You definitely learn the definition of body language. You definitely learn what his mannerisms are. It's not always easy."
Through that frustration, clarity. Calm. Inexplicable and a little strange.

Zach loves weather.

"It's the images going back and forth and the colors," Jason explained.

It's not just those maps and charts. It's that voice we know so well: Chesley McNeil. "Chesley McNeil is Zach's absolutely favorite weather person. Whatever is happening, he stops and watches."

Father and son homeless after fire

Firefighters said the home on Verbena Street is "probably a complete loss."

ATLANTA -- An Atlanta firefighter suffered second degree burns in an early morning fire that left a father and son homeless.

Atlanta Fire Captain Shawn Johnson said the family's home on Verbena Street off Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard was enguled when firefighters arrived at 3:48 a.m. Thursday.

"We had heavy involvement," he said. "It's probably a complete loss."

The father and teenage son told firefighters the fire started in a hallway furnace. They were home at the time, but managed to get out safely and are now staying with relatives.

The injured firefighter was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with a burned forehead. No names have been released.

DeKalb school board members fight to keep their jobs

ATLANTA -- Unable to stop the process in court, DeKalb County's school board members are fighting to keep from being removed at a hearing before the State Board of Education Thursday morning.

Under a 2011 law, the State Board could recommend suspension to Governor Nathan Deal, who could name replacements.

Earlier this week, a judge refused to halt the hearing when DeKalb's School Board challenged the law as unconstitutional.

The judge ruled they had filed the request too late, but left open the issue until another hearing next week.

What could be a day long hearing began before a standing room only crowd.

Making the case for removal, State Department of Education, attorney Jennifer Hackemeyer claimed DeKalb's Board "receives a failing grade for governance."

She claimed evidence will show the school system's accreditation was placed on probation last December due to mismanagement, misconduct and political infighting by board members.

She said a good case exists to suspend 6 of the 9 board members with pay.

She did not include 3 newer board members elected last fall, after the problems surfaced.

Former DeKalb County District Attorney Bob Wilson argued on behalf of DeKalb's Board.

He began by blaming some of the controversy on a "degree of firestorm" from the news media, which he asked the state board to forget.

"Some things have happened that are not pleasant," Wilson admitted, including the threat to accreditation.

But he claimed the DeKalb Board has made "significant progress."

As examples he cited 5 new members elected since 2011, a newly elected Chairman, and last week's appointment of former State Labor Commissioner Mike Thurmond as Interim Superintendent.

"The citizens spoke for change and that should matter," Wilson argued.

The state's first witness was Mark Elgart of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He explained problems that led his private agency to put DeKalb County Schools' accreditation on probation two months ago.

"The concerns here are not a political, but a performance issue. They (the board members) continue to treat it like a political matter," Elgart said.

Citing an earlier accreditation probation in 2004, Elgart claimed there's been a 10 year pattern of board failure and mismanagement.

After watching a year's worth of board meeting videos Elgart said, "the majority of their discourse has had little to do with student achievement.

"There's no cohesion about where they're headed and there hasn't been for 10 years," Elgart added.

Lead detective yanked from Pistorius case

PRETORIA, South Africa (NBC) -- Oscar Pistorius' bail hearing descended into chaos Thursday as the lead detective investigating the killing of the Olympian's girlfriend was removed from the case amid attempted murder charges of his own.

Warrant Officer Hilton Botha is due to appear in court in May accused of opening fire on a minibus taxi in 2011. Charges against him were originally withdrawn but reinstated on Wednesday at the behest of the state prosecutor, police spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila told Reuters.

The revelation, combined with Botha's struggle to answer key questions under cross-examination on Wednesday, boosted the confidence of Pistorius' defense lawyers and his family.

"We're going to win," one relative said as the family entered the courtroom at the start of the third day of a hearing examining whether the double-amputee should get bail. The sprinter is accused of the premeditated murder of model Reeva Steenkamp, 29.

"We're going in the right direction," one of Pistorius' uncles added.

There was further drama when an unidentified woman addressed the court, saying she wanted Pistorius' mental health to be examined. Her intervention was dismissed.

Later, there was a brief adjournment because of an unspecified "threat" to the court building.

The chaotic scenes in court meant that a bail decision, which had been due on Thursday, was postponed until Friday.

Dubbed the "Blade Runner," Pistorius maintains he fired into his locked bathroom in a panic over a possible prowler. However, prosecutors say the 26-year-old put on his artificial legs and stalked Steenkamp to the bathroom to kill her.

Magistrate Desmond Nair said police had showed a lack of urgency in obtaining phone records, and asked Botha why he had given evidence in English rather than his first language, Afrikaans.

After discussion of the Botha revelations, lawyers from both sides began making their final arguments.

Pistorius' defense lawyer referred to the "poor quality" of evidence gathered by police and said there was no evidence that the sprinter had committed premeditated murder.

He said Steenkamp spending the night at Pistorius' home was "consistent with a loving relationship."

A prosecution lawyer called Pistorius' account of Steenkamp's death "improbable," saying: "The only reason you'd fire four shots is to kill."

'Stay strong'
The lawyer said the discovery of bullet cartridges in Pistorius' bathroom suggested a deliberate killing at close range.

At one stage, Pistorius began sobbing and his brother, Carl, placed a hand on his back to comfort him. He also whispered: "Stay strong."

The prosecution produced a magazine article in which Pistorius talked about having a house in Italy, saying it was evidence that the athlete could easily skip bail and leave South Africa.

Prosecutors also raised the prospect that Pistorius might interfere with witnesses if released on bail. The court heard that Pistorius allegedly tried to manipulate evidence after a previous incident in which his gun was accidentally fired at a restaurant.

Magistrate Nair asked of there would be shock if Pistorius was released on bail. A defense lawyer said there were be shock if the athlete was not released, referring to apparent weaknesses in the prosecution case.

Botha, an experienced detective, testified on Wednesday that a witness heard shouting for an hour coming from the house shortly before the shooting.

Another witness heard gunshots, saw lights on in the house, heard a woman screaming two or three times, then heard another few shots, Botha said.

But under cross-examination, Botha admitted one of the witnesses was 1,000 feet away from the house at the time.

Botha told the court that needles and testosterone were found in the athlete's bedroom.

Defense lawyer Barry Roux disputed that claim, saying the substance was in fact a herbal remedy and that police had misread the label. State prosecutor Gerrie Nel also had to correct Botha when he initially called the substance "steroids."

On the first day of the hearing, prosecutors and the defense presented clashing accounts of how and why Pistorius shot Steenkamp.

A court statement from Pistorius denied "in the strongest terms" that he had deliberately killed the law graduate, adding that the athlete was "deeply in love'' with her, according to Reuters.

"I had no intention to kill my girlfriend," the statement said.

Meanwhile, Nike on Thursday said it had suspended its sponsorship of Pistorius.

"We believe Oscar Pistorius should be afforded due process and we will continue to monitor the situation closely,'" the sportswear company said in a statement.

3 dead following shootout, wreck on Las Vegas Strip

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A gunfight between a Maserati and an SUV on the Las Vegas Strip caused a fiery crash at an intersection involving a taxi that burst into flames, leaving three people dead and at least three injured early Thursday, police said.

The Maserati driver, the taxi driver and a passenger in the cab were killed. The SUV got away.

In all, five vehicles were involved in the dramatic crash around 4:30 a.m. Thursday at Flamingo and Las Vegas boulevards, a wide intersection surrounded by some of the most famous casinos on the Strip, including the Bellagio, Caesars Palace and the Paris.

It started with people in the Maserati and the SUV exchanging gunfire before the high-end sports car hit the taxi, said Sgt. John Sheahan. Three other vehicles were involved in the wreck, but the SUV was gone when police arrived, Sheahan said.

Several people were taken to the hospital, including a passenger from the Maserati. Four were taken to University Medical Center. Hospital spokeswoman Danita Cohen said three were treated and released, while one person remained in the hospital. Their condition was not released.

The intersection is expected to be closed for hours as officers investigate.

A tourist who witnessed the aftermath of the crash told KLAS-TV the burning taxi looked like a fireball.

More people may be hurt, Sheahan said.

It's the latest in a series of violent actions on the tourist corridor since the beginning of the year. Two people were critically wounded in a shooting at a parking garage Feb. 6, and a tourist was stabbed in an elevator at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay Feb. 16.

A spokesman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Jeremy Handel, said his organization didn't immediately have a comment on the incident and deferred to the police unit that patrols the tourism district.

Tegra 4i: il nuovo chip per smartphone con modem LTE integrato

Il primo frutto dell'acquisizione di Icera da parte di NVIDIA vede quest'oggi la luce: parliamo di Tegra 4i, il primo SoC NVIDIA della famiglia Tegra di tipo single chip destinato al mercato delle soluzioni smartphone. Noto con il nome in codice di Grey, questa soluzione integra le tecnologie sviluppate da NVIDIA per le soluzioni Tegra destinate a sistemi tablet in un singolo chip, così da ridurre dimensioni e poter meglio far fronte alle esigenze specifiche delle soluzioni smartphone.

Per poter raccogliere l'interesse dei produttori di smartphone NVIDIA ha dovuto operare con Grey in due distinte direzioni. La prima è la riduzione delle dimensioni complessive del chip, requisito indispensabile per l'integrazione negli smartphone. La seconda è l'integrazione di modem LTE all'interno del chip, funzionalità che è un prerequisito indispensabile per gli smartphone di nuova generazione.

In Tegra 4i troviamo un'architettura differente rispetto a quanto implementato in Tegra 4: la necessità di contenere le dimensioni complessive e integrare anche un modem LTE ha portato NVIDIA ad utilizzare un'architettura di CPU differente, abbandonando quella Cortex A15 di Tegra 4 in favore di una Cortex A9 r4. La superiore frequenza di clock massima, 2,3GHz contro 1,9GHz, permette di compensare in parte l'inferiore efficienza di questa architettura rispetto a quella A15. Dal versante GPU diminuisce il numero di cores, passato da 72 a 60, ma rimane presente quella che NVIDIA definisce come Computational Photography Architecture, quella serie di funzionalità specifiche per l'utilizzo di prodotti Tegra 4 come fotocamere.

Accanto al nuovo chip Tegra 4i NVIDIA ha presentato anche la propria piattaforma smartphone di riferimento, indicata con il nome di Phoenix. E' composta da display da 5 pollici di diagonale, con risoluzione di 1920x1080 pixel, funzionalità 4G LTE e spessore complessivo di 8 millimetri. Questa piattaforma, nelle intenzioni di NVIDIA, dovrà fungere da base di sviluppo per i partner così che possano proporre propri modelli di smartphone di fascia alta basati su architettura Tegra 4i.

E' ipotizzabile che al Mobile World Congress 2013 di Barcellona, evento che aprirà i battenti la prossima settimana, emergeranno nuove informazioni su questa architettura e su quella Tegra 4 annunciata al CES. Mancano per il momento informazioni su quali produttori di smartphone, oltre che di tablet, adotteranno queste due proposte nei propri modelli.

GamePad di Wii U utilizzabile con il PC

Come si può vedere anche nel video allegato alcuni modder sono riusciti a far funzionare il GamePad di Wii U come sistema di interfacciamento per il PC, anche se risultano assenti le funzionalità tattili e di gaming off-screen.

Al momento le levette analogiche funzionano solamente in senso digitale, ma questo limite dovrebbe essere superato con un aggiornamento previsto per la prossima settimana che permetterà al controller Wii U di essere riconosciuto come un gamepad per Xbox 360.

Online una foto rubata del prossimo SoC Apple A7

Il sito web iOSDoc ha pubblicato una presunta fotografia "rubata" che mostrerebbe la scheda madre del prossimo iPhone 5S di Apple, lo smartphone verosimilmente in fase di sviluppo da Apple e che andrebbe a succedere all'attuale iPhone 5, equipaggiata con un processore Apple "A7".

Secondo le indiscrezioni disponibili, che iOSDoc ricava da una fonte anonima ma definita come molto attedibile, il nuovo SoC di Apple sarebbe di tipo quad-core ed in grado di operare ad una frequenza di 1,2GHz (rispetto agli 1,3GHz del SoC Apple A6 presente in iPhone 5). La memoria RAM arriverebbe invece a 2GB.

E' comunque difficile poter affermare con certezza di aver a che fare con una foto reale o una contraffazione. Assumendo, con beneficio d'inventario, che sia reale, è possibile supporre che il prossimo iPhone 5S non differisca in dimensioni e aspetto dall'attuale, similmente a quanto Apple ha fatto con il passaggio tra iPhone 4 e iPhone 4S.

Il prossimo smartphone della Mela potrebbe inoltre essere equipaggiato con la GPU PowerVR SGX554MP4, la stessa utilizzata per iPad di quarta generazione, e vedrà il debutto del nuovo sistema operativo iOS 7 il quale dovrebbe introdurre una nuova e migliorata versione di Siri in grado di eseguire molti più compiti rispetto all'attuale.
